I last flew Lufthansa from Australia to Frankfurt in 2000, and the plane was a quite old 747B. Since then they quit the run from the Asian hubs into Australia because of the competition from the Asian airlines (Singapore, Cathay et al) which have newer planes and much, much better in-flight service. Lufthansa now code-share with Singapore Airlines to Australia, and German passengers transferring from a Lufthansa flight to a Singapore Airlines flight can't believe their luck! I assume that the Asian airlines don't fly the routes you want to take: If not, that's your bad luck!

I have had a different experience. We have flown Lufthansa from the west coast and chicago to Frankfurt and Geneva and have never had a bag lost, never had poor service and never had a bad seat.
IN fact on one flight they upgraded my three friends to business class just because we were "nice" at checkin
United seems to change flight times as much as evryohe else. In fact, sinbce 9-11 it seems like everyone changes times and you just get used to it.
In 3 days I am flying Lufthansa from the west coast to Geneva via Frankfurt and expect another simple and clean flight with food better than united.
We flew BA last year because we need to use another airlines miles and they were good too but Heathrow is horrible

What a strange thread!
Almost everybody who had a negative experience with Lufthansa in the last 20 years appears to take the opportunity to complain.
To put things right:
Lufthansa is a pretty ordinary carrier, comparable to KLM, SAS, Air France, BA etc., which means they are a little superior to the big US airlines and somewhat inferior to the fabulous southeast Asian carriers.
In my experience (I am a Lufthansa Frequent Traveller, but fly other airlines as well), Lufthansa is above the average regarding reliability - and this matters more than free drinks.
My advice: Select your carrier mainly with regard to flight times and connections. This matters more than everything else.
And avoid airlines which have a reputation of being unreliable.
A final story:
We once booked a flight from Frankfurt to Los Angeles and chose United, because it was a non-stop flight scheduled to land as early as 3 p.m. We paid more than many other airlines charged, just to arrive early in L.A.
What happened? The flight was cancelled, because it was not fully booked. We were redirected with a stop in Dallas. There we had to go through immigration and customs, with our two little children. One of the screening machines was broken down, and there were extremely long lines. The airport did not have a working air condition. We finally arrived in L.A. at 8 p.m., completely groggy.
Did I make a vow never again to fly United? Certainly not, it was just bad luck.

I ditto what traveler 1959 said. The service on LH is good, solid, not exciting. It is a good, solid carrier with a superior safety record. My husband and I were Senator class for several years, which means we flew alot on the airlines, over 100,000 miles a year. We had 1 lost suitcase which was delivered in 24 hours, one within 2 days.
I agree, the Asians and several of the Middle East carriers have superior everything. But LH beats out just about all of the American carriers by a long shot.
