a FODORITE left her favorite sweater in a bistro in Provence.
She knew I was going to France and this place was a favorite of mine. She emailed me to ask if they still had her sweater.
they did and I mailed it to her.

Two days ago in Ireland while I was trying to pay for petrol, I reached into my pocket and evidently came out with a 50E note stuck to my hand that fell to the floor behind me. The woman behind me bumped me and honestly pointed out my problem....

No one will believe this, but I have left an umbrella (the compact double folding kind) in every major city in every country in western and central Europe except Albania and Spain. It's something I just can't remember to retrieve when I go to a restaurant or when I put it down while shopping. I've done the same in the U.S. and have calculated how much this has cost me -- too much!! Now I just don't take an umbrella no matter how hard it's raining.

I left my cashmere stole in a taxi cab in London on my way home. I realized what I did 48 hours later. I called the hotel to see if they could help me track the taxi cab. An hour later I got a call from the hotel to tell me that they will be sending it back to me at no charge. I couldn't believe how kind and generous they were. That is one of the many reasons I love staying at the Knightstbridge Hotel.

Just one time and I still hate to think about it. It was the last day of two months in Italy. We were staying in a small town near the airport where we would be flying home from. I had taken everything out of my luggage and put the items in the chest of drawers as I needed to replack for the flight home. I had purchased some beautiful belts, some jewelry and my husband had surprised me with a beautiful bracelet when we were staying on Capri. The drawers in the chest got filled up so I put those precious items in one of the nightstand drawer.

We met a friend for cocktails and dinner that night. I evidently got food poisoning from my dinner as I was horribly ill all night. Our flight home left around noon or 1:00p.m. the next day. I was so weak in the morning my husband told me to stay in bed until it was time to shower and dress for the flight and I did. He did all the packing which was fine as he actually packed better then I usually did.

Somewhere across the Atlantic I got a sudden horrible thought. Since my husband had no idea that I had used the nightstand drawer..well you know the rest of the story.

The owner of the hotel wasn't exactly a friend of our Italian friend but they sure knew each other well due to the same service clubs etc. We called our friend and he said he would go to the hotel and retrieve all the items. The owner of the hotel told our Italian friend nothing had been turned in.

I don't know if the owner was telling the truth or not. Somehow having seen the housekeeping staff I never really thought they kept all the goodies but who knows. Or maybe the next guest found them and kept them. In any case I was sure heartbroken. And our dear friend in Italy was mortified. That made us feel terrible too. A lesson learned for sure. Even if I am 100% sure I have not put something in certain drawers I check each and every drawer, the closet, the shelf in the closet and even under the bed, the bathroom etc.

I still miss all the beautiful items that decided to stay in Italy without me.

I have a long history of losing things in Europe. First trip to France I left my good raincoat on a train. Reported it but of course it never turned up; lost a cardigan sweater in Salzburg -- not enough English at the B&B to inquire about it; left an all-weather coat on a National Express bus between LGW and LHR, reported it, they found it and said they would hold it for me -- for 3 weeks -- right -- but they really did! Two weeks ago, buckled up in my seat prior to takeoff from Frankfurt, I realized I had left my good leather jacket in the waiting area. I pushed against the tide of the oncoming passengers to get out of the plane, fly up one or two flights of stairs and explain to the attendant at the gate. I had to leave my boarding pass with her while I searched -- and found! -- the coat, retrieved my boarding pass, then raced back onboard just before takeoff. DH has threatened to lose me if I do this one more time. LOL

Oh, yes, and I dropped my favorite rain jacket at an airport in China amid a pushing, shoving throng of locals and was unable to retrieve it for fear of being trampled. I do seem to have a problem keeping track of my outerwear.

Ireland 2007. My wife (L) had purchased a very unique pair of earrings in Doolin & wore them a few days later on our trip to Skellig Michael. We didn't notice one was missing until we were back at the B&B in Kenmare & we just assumed it was lost during the climb at Skellig.

Upon arriving home & reviewing our pictures, I noticed in the 1st picture I took of her on the island, she was missing the earring. I emailed Ken of Skellig Trips & he said, he had found an earring. I sent him a copy of the picture of L on the island with only 1 earring. We received the earring about a week later. As you would expect, they are now her favorite pair of earrings.

My mother left a drawer full of clothes at a hotel while on a tour of France about 8-10 years ago; she couldn't remember which of three or four hotels. Several weeks after she got home, I started emailing them, one at a time, until finally a hotel in Carcassonne reported that it had her clothes. I had to pay for shipping (can't remember how much, but it fairly reasonable), and she received the package within a week.

The worst happened with me.. I lost my bag full of dresses in Singapore, that too during my honeymoons ; had to take the cruise. I realized that I don't have my bag when I boarded the cruise. I was in my honeymoons and that too in a 4night cruise and the best of my clothes were not with me. anyways, did some shopping in Penang and Phuket. But yes, got my bag back.

I once was on a bus in Europe. I stowed my small suitcase and generic, odd lots, navyblue raincoat in the rack overhead. When it came time to get off, I grabbed the case and raincoat (the only one on the rack, by the way). Several days went by before I had need of the coat. Imagine my surprise when the coat buttoned on the "other side", the sleeves came down to my ankles, and the rest of the coat trailed several feet behind me! I feel sorry for the man who tried to put my coat on!

I asked the B&B people what I should do. They called the bus line while I was out, but they had not had any coat returned. They took the wrong coat off to the local charity shop and gave me a plastic emergency coat, the kind about the weight of trash bags. It lasted me a couple days until I got to London, when I blew myself to a good name brand raincoat. I felt very elegant in that coat for years afterwards.

The other thing I lost, I hoped I would never see again. I was with two of my nephews at Gatwick for our return to the States after three wonderful weeks in England and Wales. I had my hands full with carry on and suitcase. All of a sudden I felt my half slip beginning to slip. With hands full, there was no way to discretely do anything. People were pouring into the airport so I couldn't stop anad put bags down without causing a traffic jam.

I felt the slip slipping further and further down. When it got to the floor, I just stepped out of it and kept on walking. One of the nephews announced in his ten year old piping voice, "Aunt, did you just lose your slip!?" I told him I didn't know where it came from. When we got on the plane, the twelve year old whispered, "Aunt, you are a pretty cool character. I saw that slip come down your legs! I sure hope no one I know was walking behind us." (I sincerely echoed the last sentiment!

My camera! I sell my photos, so have a mid-of-the-line decent camera, worth about $600 new. Now, the photos were mostly on my DH's laptop already, so that wasn't the worry - I loved my camera! However, when we got out of the rental car at Glasgow Airport, I left it on the back seat. Luckily for me, I realized this by the time we got to London, and called Enterprise while we were waiting for our connection. They retrieved the camera, and was able to ship it to me. I paid about $30 for postage - worth it!

I once left a lavender LLBean raincoat at my hotel in Rome. I figured it out when I got home, emailed the hotel, and it arrived a few weeks later.
