Looking for hotel in Madrid
I am traveling to Madrid, and would like a recommendation on a hotel that is in a safe neighborhood and close distance to metros and attractions.

Does anyone know which neighborhoods are and are not safe for tourists?

Thank you!

I stayed at the hotel Mora two summers ago. Though not fancy by any stretch of the word, it's very affordable and pretty nice (found it through this forum). It's located within about a 5 minute walk of all the museums in a very safe area. I don't know about metros - we didn't use them - we walked everywhere.

I have stayed at the Villa Real and loved it! It is a small to medium sized luxury hotel well located near the Metro, the Prado and Retiro Park, with lovely views of a beautiful fountain (the name of which escapes me). It has a nice dining room for breakfast and a small bar with authentic Roman mosaic tile. The rooms were roomy and well appointed. It is a lovely hotel!

Check out Madridman. You have a lot of choice in Madrid. We stayed at the lower end in a Hostale in Sol but it was great value. It was clean and nice but too noisy. I would chooses a more modern hotel next time. You can ask people about places on the Madridman board or check out any of Maribels posts on spain as she has loads of great info. Have fun.

there is a spanish hotel called the GreenHotels. they have two hotels in Madrid- one which is three years old is the Lope de Vega (just 100 feet from the Paseo del Prado across from the Prado Museum). we stayed there for 100 euros per night last fall and had a lovely room- excellent air conditioning and a no smoking floor. the other is just up the hill two blocks (Green del Prado) and is cheaper. a nice area convenient to everything.

Check out www.hostaladriano.com - its just doubled in size at the end of 2002, and there's a brand new wing. The older wing was just refurbished in 2001. It's very close to the Puerta del Sol.

To: payant - I've heard of the Hotel Green El Prado from friends (but they didn't stay there). It's supposed to be very good, very reasonable price (95 euros for a triple room) and very quiet! which is important in Madrid. Has anyone stayed there?

A hotel in Madrid that we liked very much is the Melia Castilla, part of the Sol Melia chain, located at
C/ Capitan Haya, 43
Madrid 28020
Spain

City Center hotel in a very safe and posh area (the Ferrari dealer is right across the street if that indicates the area). Excellent rooms, great lobby, and the breakfast buffet has to be seen to be believed. The only thing I do not know for sure is how it is located in realtion to underground, since we used taxis only. A nice hotel. Only down side is the size - it is BIG around 900 rooms, so if that bothers you don't use.
Full info is on the Melia web site.
We stayed at the Hotel Londers (High Tech Petite Palace) this past weekend, which we booked through hotels.com. A little more pricey than some hotels, but the location was ideal (right off of Plaza Del Sol) and the rooms are very very nice (ask for a corner room and you may get up to 4 balconies). In addition, the breakfast was great save the 12 women smoking at the table next to us.

AND, for you competer junkies, they have a competer with high speed internet access available to their clients so you can let your friends/family know that everything is bueno once you arrive.

My husband & I stayed at Hotel Carlos V. It is a "member" of the Best Western chain, but is privately owned as are all the other Best Western's in Europe.(They only use the name for marketing purposes). This one is in an excellent location, on a pedestrian street and close to everything. They even have a complimentary buffet breakfast. Price was moderate & room was clean & larger than I thought it would be. You can find out all the info on this hotel by checking Best Western's website & clicking on Europe. Have a great time in Madrid.

Check out Luxurylink.com - get Ritz and Villareal on a regular basis, and they seem available for around $600 -700 for 3 or 4 nights which includes one meal and so on. About a third of their rack rate value. Seem to be one of the best deals on that site and coming up every week.

Here's another vote for the Carlos V! Great location and very acceptable breakfast buffet. This hotel is half a block from a Corte Inglés dept. store which has an extensive grocery store on the bottom floor. During an extended visit to Madrid, it's nice to pick up makings for a picnic after a run of restaurant experiences. This hotel also has a shuttle service to the airport which was appealing.

I just returned from a tour of Spain. We stayed at Hotel Moderno (Arenel, 2 phone # 91 531 09 00).

We were 50 yards away from Plaza del Sol (and the Sol train stop)and across from an incredible bakery

I felt very safe.

The hotel was quaint, the staff friendly and the price included a pretty good buffet breakfast. We were able to walk to the Palace, Plaza Mayor and several museums.

If you want a nice budget hotel, try the Hotel Anaco. It is about 2 blocks from a metro, and is in walking distance of Madrid's main shopping district.

The Web site is http://www.anacohotel.com/

A side note to sort of update staceyB' post---- the neighborhood couple of blocks down from Hotel Mora is getting kind of seedy. I have read and Maribel confirmed it on her Maribel's Guides that the area has gotten crowded and dangerous. I had recommended Hotel Mora in the past, but I will like to provide a fair warning of this new situation.
