Looking for a Special Cooking School

The husband of a friend of mine ihas asked me to help him find a very special cooking school where he can take his wife for her 50th birthday. What makes this a difficult task is that she is already a very accomplished chef. The food she serves is as good as any 5-star restaurant, including the presentation -- and she does it all herself! So, if anyone knows about an exceptional cooking school, preferably in a lovely setting, please write and tell me. He says it can be anywhere in the world,
Thanks, Sandy

I was in Paris again last year and took a 1-day Pastry class at le Cordon Bleu. It was such a hoot. The Chef explained everything in french (and was quite funny!) but his Sous Chef was American and translated everything.

It was actually quite reasonable in cost and they also have week-long hands-on courses in just about everything. Your friend should checkout www.cordonbleu.net (I think that was it) and it will list all the upcoming courses, dates and places (London, NY, etc.). The only drawback I saw was that most of the people in the classroom were actual young students at le Cordon Bleu and fooled around quite a bit which was distracting.

The other mini-cooking school is at the Ritz Hotel in Paris which may offer a more "adult" atmosphere with daily and week-long courses. Try RitzParis.com to find out what classes are coming up. Good Luck!

No personal experience here, but it looks like the sort of place you are looking for. It is in Roanne, near Lyon.
http://3ponts.edu/

How about Rick Stein's cooking school in Padstow, England, next to his Fish Restaurant? North Cornwall is also stunningly beautiful to explore.

http://www.rickstein.co.uk/

Another idea would be Darina Allen's Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland. A lovely country house atmosphere with nice accomodations. If you are looking for a nice setting, this might worth checking out.
www.ballymaloe-cookery-school.ie

You can try your hand at Pays Basque cooking while staying in comfortable surroundings at unique B & B located near the village of Ahetze, a few miles inland from the coast, about halfway between Biarritz and St. Jean de Luz. You can check out the information at the following sites. http://www.basquecuisine.com/
http://thescarletmacaw.com

Bon Appetit used to have an ad for an Italian Cooking school on the southern coast of Italy, near Naples. Sorry I can't remember the name of the famous Chef!

The Cooking School of Aspen (cookingschoolofaspen.com) has a very widely acclaimed program in the US. They offer one or two international trips each year. In the fall of 2002 there is a trip to Italy that sounds wonderful!
ALso contact The International Kitchen in Chicago (internationalkitchen.com). They have an extensive list of international cooking school trips.
