Looking for a driver in Northern Italy
We are four ladies who have taken the train, tried driving, and taking tours in Europe. We really want to do our own thing, but we were hoping to find someone who would drive us from city to city. For instance....we will stay in Milan a few days.....then we need a ride to Lake Como where we will stay for a few days, then we need a ride to Stressa where we will stay for a few days....want to travel at our own pace. Does anyone have an ideas how we might arrange to do this type of trip?

I am not sure why the trains are not adequate for this itinerary, but if you really want a driver in that area then look at Davide. He is based in Como so I would use another driver from Stresa back to MXP.

Off the top of my head, why trains might not be adequate:
1. If you have luggage, trains require heavy lifting that might be difficult for elderly or handicapped travelers. Not everyone can travel with one bag.
2. The need for a seat. I have seen people stand from Bologna to Verona, about an hour and a half, and I have known people who had to stand all the way from Milan to Venice.
3. Trains don't go everywhere one wants to go when one wants to get there (though they go to an admirable number of places).
4. Normal trains can't climb steep grades, so they generally use tunnels to pass through hilly and mountainous regions, some of which are the very scenery one comes to see.

You guys are not answering the OP's question. Whether or not there are better ways to travel is not the issue. They are looking for a driver.
That said, Stefano is very good, and when hub and I used him in Umbria to drive to several hill towns with awkward bus schedules, he said he drives all over Italy:

This was in 2008 or 2009. At the time, his English was not great but it was sufficient. We had a few words of Italian to fill in the gaps. Please tell him the Rhodys sent you if you do work with him.

Hello... I just stumbled on your message today... If you are still looking for a driver, my husband is an Italian former taxi driver who now offers his driving services privately. We are currently preparing to move to the area of the lakes (Maggiore, Como, Varese) and would be available to take you wherever you like, whenever you like. Please let me know if you may be interested and we can discuss details. Thanks and best wishes, Geraldine
