Long-Term in Mittenwald, Dec 06

Hi Folks,

I'm currently dreaming about spending about a month in a "holiday home" in Mittenwald Dec 06-Jan 07. I'm really excited about spending my days reading, hiking, exploring, and generally enjoying the ambiance. I may even take advantage of some of the US military facilities there (library, px) as I'm retired military.

However, I do have some (minor, I hope) concerns: laundry & internet access. I suppose I could rely on my host/hostess to help me find laundry facilities. But I wonder if a large village like Mittenwald will have wireness internet access or an internet cafe?

I'm also torn on whether to rent a car or not. I'm getting rates of about $1,000 for a 31-day lease. I'm used to and very comfortable with using the trains, so I don't know if this would be a huge waste of money.

So -- any hints? Laundry facilites & internet access in Mittenwald? Waste of money to lease a car?

Thanks for your insights!

In September'04 BavariaBen and I spent a great couple of days on a farm just outside of Mittenwald.

While you would think a town that size would have internet cafes all over the place, we found that not to be the case.We scoured the town looking for one. Even the T.I. office couldn't help.

By luck,we wandered into the "Cafe Alt" right on the main square, and just happened to strike up a conversation with the owner to see if he knew of any place.

Lo and behold he whips out his personal laptop and hooks us up to the Internet for E3 per hour. (http://www.alt-mittenwald.de/)

It's worth a try while you are there. They also serve good grub.

As for the car, the rate seems about right for that long. But for that time of year you may find the weather a bit challenging, which could put a damper on wanting to do any extensive driving.

$1000 will buy a lot of bier and brats Good luck.

I don't know about Mittenwald, but I know that the base library in Garmisch has internet access that you should be able to use for free. I'm almost certain that the base would also have laundry facilities. I know that Edleweiss (the military resort in Garmisch) has a good sized laundry room.

Also, I don't know if you're interested, but the military resort has a nice spa with a pool, hot tub, workout room, and massage therapists that you would also be able to use. I think they charge a fee for non-guests, but in the several times that we have used it, we have never once been asked for a room key or anything to prove that we were staying at the lodge.
Sounds like a fabulous trip. Good luck!

Most hosts/hostesses can make arrangements for your wash. There's also this service in Garmisch that will pick up, clean, and deliver laundry in Mittenwald; vacationers are specifically mentioned (in German: you might use a translator for details):

Trains and buses should get you cheaply wherever you're going in the area; ask your host/hostess about weekly or monthly pass options.
Have a good trip!

Internet: found this reference at www.bensbauernhof.com:

"Later in the day we visit the Restaurant "Alt Mittenwald" at Hochstrasse 18 and meet the owner Christian Daberkow. It just so happens that the only internet connection available to the public in Mittenwald (or so we were told by others to include a local travel info office) is at the Alt Mittenwald and provided by Christian. He sits his nice large laptop on the bar and charges 3 Euro an hour. The connection is fast and the atmosphere makes it my kind of Internet cafe. Noch ein Bier bitte...

Holy Cow!! You folks are fabulous! Now I'm so excited, I don't know if I can wait for Dec!!

Yup, I would *much* rather spend the $1000 on bier & brats than on car & gas & emissions, etc. I think I'll continue to plan to using only public transport!

The Alt-Mittenwald sounds just perfect! Food & surfing, yahoo!

I really don't want to have to haul my laundry all the way to G-P, and I think I'll need to go online almost every day and don't want to make the trip there every day. So -- I'm very, very happy to see there will be ways to do both from Mittenwald.

That heymes.de service sounds like a tremendous winner! Maybe I'll never leave!

Thanks again!
