Should we buy a London Pass before going to London? There are 3 of us going for a week. <BR>Help! And thanks

I go to London at least once a year and in my opinion the passes are not worth it. The U.K. is working to get free admission to all government sponsored museums. I could be wrong, but it seemed to me that the passes only covered sites, restaurants, hotels and stores that were not mainstream.

Philip, thanks for your answer. I think I mean the London travel card. I heard that the tube and bus are expensive. Someone suggested to buy the travel card in the States. Any ideas? <BR>thanks- Judi

Our 7 day, zone 1&2 tube/bus pass was slighter over 18GBP per person. We bought it in London. The 7 day pass does require a photo--either bring one or go in the little photo booth at the station. To be honest, we never even needed Zone 2. I don't know if this was the most economical way to do it, but it was easy to do. We did not buy a London Pass to any attractions. We did not find the lines that long. You can also prepurchase tickets to some attractions (ie Tower of London)at many train or tube stations and from many of the hop on, hop off bus tours.

Oh you mean the travelcard for the Tube & bus!! The card which you purchase in the US is good if you just want to hop on any day and go anywhere, but I believe it's priced using all of London's 6 zones. You can buy all day cards in any London tube station for just the zones you want (the more zones you choose, the more expensive). As a tourist you probably will not need to go out of Zone 1 or 2 (unless you are taking the tube from the airport). I suggest you buy daily cards in London, because some days you may be able to walk where you want to go and not need public transportation, in other words you have more flexibility buying them in London. London's tube system is one of the most user-friendly I've seen. Buying tickets from their machines is easy. They have maps painted at every entrance and on the walls of the platform and the best part is that many stations have an electronic board that tells you how many minutes until the next train. I believe the "London Pass" that Judi is asking about is a relatively new pass that, if purchased abroad, includes attractions, museums, etc. and also the tube, train and bus. They have a website at www.londonpass.com. I too am wondering if it is worth it to purchase for a 3 day visit. Hopefully someone who has used this pass will give us feedback.

I am still humming and arring about the worth of buying the London Pass myself, but I have worked out that it is actually cheaper to buy the visitor travelcard and the Pass seperately (by a few dollars only, but I'd rather it in my hand then theirs). Especially if you only want to travel zones 1 and 2 on the underground. I could be wrong but a three day Pass automatically charges you for a 6zone travelcard, whereas seperately you can pay for only a 1 and 2 zone card. Without the travel quantity the London Pass is available in London, so even if you don't decide now, it is still available if you change your mind. <BR>Keep smiling
