London: When Will Summer Come?
Or at least a summer that is a modicum of what one would expect weatherwise in summer - temps above 70 or so and sun
Whilst i have not been in London yet this summer i look everyday in the paper and see highs of a usual 64 and lows in the 40s and either overcast or rain.
Well at least we know the answer to that evergreen Q - will i need air conditioning in summer in London?
And i believe London did not really have any summer last summer either.
How come there's no summer (apparently if temps in my fish wrap are right) in London this 'summer'?

Guess summer instantly arrove - have to look at paper tomorrow to see the highs and lows.
has not it been languishing in the mid to low 60s for weeks?
British Open it was 53 degrees and 40 mph all last weekend?
80 in London demands AC?

It's been really grim here in cloggieland too. Even today, when they promised us nice weather it was cloudy for most of the day. Warmer than it has been but not much sun. Monday we managed a magnificent 12 C as our daytime high. It was warmer at night! Yesterday it rained all day. Tomorrow it will be 28C here they say, then it all collapses into thunderstorms again. Next week is still warmish, but wet then it gets cold again for the beginning of August according to the two week forecast. A nice period of sun, 25 C would be good. I missed summer this year I fear by going to the US (where I had snow in Arizona
) May was really nice apparently.
Whatever happened to the Mediterranean climate they promised us we'd get with global warming?

Some scenarios have northern Europe getting an ice age practically with global warming which may well (some experts say already has and may not be able to be changed) upset the Gulf Stream and Europe will have weather like lands at those high latitudes should have - cold, bitter cold in winter

Pal, how can you say that - it was baking today! Not quite 'scorchio' but pretty warm nonetheless. Also, kindly do not use farenheit - it's near meaningless to us. I even had the aircon on in my car on the way home (instead of the more traditional window one inch open and litter blowing around inside like a mini tornado)
We had free Ben and Jerrys ice cream at work - a pressie from the IT team to thank everyone for being patient while they 'migrated' us from MACs to PC's over the last month or so. (I would have thought getting rid of the MACs was gift enough, myself).

Oh dear, I'm showing my age, I still think in Farenheit and have to do a conversion to the C temps on the weather report!
It's been bloody hot today. OK, in degrees not baking, but hot and stuffy and humid, so it felt worse.
I don't even have proper windows in my office, just 3 tiny louvre things, so it was horrible! Luckily we've got a freezer so i keep a box of ice pops handy.

Kindly don't use centigrade - it's neasr meaningless to us. And don't call it celsius: a damnfool American habot our silly givers of anthropomorphic weather forecasts are trying to foist on us.
I spent today in seaside resorts. BLEEDING uncomfortable.

I really think I must move back to the UK because I thrive on cool weather and rain. Love it. Cannot tolerate heat. My ideal temps would be about 60-65. I love light jacket weather.
Another think I love about the climate is the UK does not get cold and long winters! I am SO jealous...

hi Pal,
just to put you straight, summer arived here in Cornwall on Saturday, when Camborne, lovely Camborne was the sunniest place in England, as it was on Monday and Tuesday, apparently.
Summer is due to end tomorrow when we revert to rain.
5 days of summer is a bit short IMO, even for Britain.
regards, ann

Great to hear from Camborne !
It has been a miserable winter here in Sydney.
We have barely made it above 60 degrees F this week.
I do hope Camborne, the "spiritual home" of my Dutch ancestors, hits the 80's when we visit next June.

Speak for yourself old timer, I've long since stopped thinking in farenheit.
Weather is just lovely in London this week - mid-high 20s, although I'd be happier without the humidity that comes with it. My packed train last night was revolting, particularly as we've suddenly been invaded by italian teenagers who seem to travel in packs of 40.
I had a lovely bottle of wine and a game of frisbee in Greenwich Park after work however, that's what summer in London is all about.

Summer has been nearly non-existent in London but has warmed up nicely this week. Warm but not hot - about mid 20's. Trouble is, the office is sweltering with no airconditioning and windows that stick. Still, better than being cold.

I can't be doing with centigrade for hot weather. Don't get it at all. Having said that i can't cope with Farenheit for the cold.
It's absolutely sweltering in Greenwich - so it is tit thursday in abundance.
Also the hot weather has made the place infested with flying ants. Why is that?

So Farenheit can have a temperature scale named after him, but poor old Ander Celcius cannot - Pah!
I find Celcius far more logical - particularly dealing with lower temperatures.
And I know - if I wish to be logical I should be saying how it is a wonderful 297 degrees Kelvin here today.

Surprised there is any mention of temperature. One thing that I love about the weather forecast on Radio 4 is the language - Just how should I interpret "I will be a little fresher than yesterday?" But then again I am a huge fan of Scilly Automatic
