We feel a taxi would be too expensive. What should we do? We have to fly out of Gatwick at 7.45 am. Thanks.

You need to be at LGW by about 06:00 or a bit before and have to travel all across central London and then down to LGW. You can take the Gatwick Express - the first one is around 04:30 - so you'd just need to take a cab or a bus to Victoria, not all the way to the airport.
But why Paddington? Even IF you are staying there for the rest of your stay, staying at Paddington the night before a very early morning flight out of LGW isn't very practical.
If I had that early a flight I'd stay the night at a hotel either next to Victoria or at LGW.

Why are you staying in Paddington at all.
Paddington, by central London standards, is "out in the sticks" and is one or two Tube/Bus rides from anything significant to do in London.
Find yourself a hotel near Victoria instead

The first GEX trains leave Victoria at 3:30 and 4:30 AM as Janis has pointed out
www.gatwickexpress.com
I agree that paying for a private transfer is probably not worth it at that hour.

Thanks for the feedback. I am staying with freinds, and they live near Paddington stn. I don't mind spending on an airport hotel or a hotel near Victoria stn the night before I leave. Any hotel suggestions? Thanks.

Even during the night there is frequent bus service. For example, with one change you can get from Paddington to Victoria in as little as eleven minutes. Use the Journey Planner at www.tfl.gov.uk for the timetables.

Hotel near Gatwick which abuts the Crawley rail platform (and therefore easily reachable by rail from London.)..the Arora; they have a free shuttle service to the airport; Thistle Victoria sits on top of Victoria station.
