Not to mention the regular sports commentator on the Goons, Hugh Jampton. I cannot quote here the cover names they gave to "spies" in one of their programmes. Suffice it to say the BBC controllers of the early 50s must have been very innocent.

FARRINGDON
Named after Farringdon Street which gave its name to this area - comes from William de Farindon who bought a lot of land here in 1279 - Faringdon Street was named in his honor - street 'built on 1738 arches above the old Fleet River, now a sewer'
Station opened 1863 as Farringdon Street - re-named 1922 Farringdon & High Holburn

HOLLAND PARK
Named after Holland House in the park named after it. House came into the hands of the Earl of Holland (in Lincolnshire) in 1600s. Landsdown Road was considered but opened as Holland Park in 1900.
Note - i visited Holland Park recently and it's a very very intriguing park - especially on a nice day when the play fields are full of cricketers and families. Lovely gardens in back of house and one of London's newest and most controversial statues - one seemingly a pile of junk but really it's award-winning art. London's Whole Foods Market is just down a tad from the park to stock up on healthy picnic supplies.

NORTH GREENWICH
Greenwich 'comes either from the Saxon invaders who called it Green Village (from OE green and wic) - or perhaps the invading Danes who callied it the Green Reach (straight part of Thames where Greenwich sits)
Domesday Book was Grenvtz. Station opened as part of Jubilee Line extension in 1999.
(I walked on the Thames Path from Greenwich proper to North Greenwich - a grimy area of rotting industrial detritus and then the O2 (a k a the infamous Millennium Dome) sitting like a white elephant it was. David Beckham Soccer Academy nearby. Otherwise this is a wasteland.
