Oh -- yes -- I had meant to say there isn't a Whitechapel/Aldgate station.

Sorry.

I don't think it's embarrassing, but London is the only major city I've ever heard of that didn't have public transportation on Christmas. They even have it in places like Prague, etc., more minor cities. I don't know why they do that in London, as it is a Christian holiday which many do not observe, and that means many people who might depend on the bus or metro couldn't get to work, etc. But maybe no one in London works on CHristmas, which is also unusual, as certainly some people have to, say if they work in a hospital, police, or even hotels. Of course this does force taxi drivers to work more.

So public transportation isn't as essential as emergency services, but many people who work in hospitals might not own cars (they don't where I live).

We are renting an apartment close to the Aldgate East Tube Station. Is that considered zone 1? What is your recommendation as far as travel cards/oyster cards?

-------From tulips post above--------

Claudina; if you want to take advandtage of 2for1 offers you need a travel card from a train station, look at the link in Janisj's post.

If you don't want to bother with that (and keep in mind that many museums and galleries are free), then just get an Oyster Card with a 7-day travel pass for zone 1 and 2 added onto the Oyster Card + some extra money to cover the additional day, and to cover any trips you make outside of zone 2.

And yes, that station is in zone 1.

Aldgate East is in zone 1. You should spend some time on this site to get familiar with our transport system

Just a note . . . In your other post you said it was near the Aldgate/Whitechapel station. Aldgate, Aldgate East, and Whitechapel are all different stations.
