London to Venice
We are trying to get from London to Venice.
What is the best route.
Easyjet has a flight from Stansted for 6.99 pounds but it leaves at 6:50 in the morning. How can we get to the airport from downtown London on time? Taxi, train?
We are only staying in Venice for the day and then off to Florence on the 6:00 train.
Any must do's, don't's ?
Appreciated!

I won't debate the pros and cons of a day trip to Venice. One of the reasons the flight you want is so cheap is just the problem you're having...how to get there in time. Also, that fare will go up some when taxes are added (but yes, still a bargain). A taxi or staying somewhere near the airport (I can't help there) is the answer.
Easyjet has later flights and BA flies from Gatwick and BMI (flybmi.com) flies from Heathrow.

The best route from central London to Stansted depends on where you're starting.
The 0500 train from Liverpool St will get you to Stansted for 0545. The bus from Victoria coach station that gets to Marble Arch at 0442 will get you to Stansted at 0602,though you'll probably want to get one earlier (they run every 20 mins). Details from the "getting here" section of the Stansted website.
Unless you're based close to a National Express bust stop, or to Liverpool St station, you'll need a taxi to get to where you want to start, as there's next to no public transport that early.
The only significant differences, BTW, between getting to Stansted from central London and getting to Gatwick by public transport are:
1. The train takes 15 minutes less to Gatwick
2. There's really no bus option for Gatwick early in the morning

We wanted to skip Venice but
1. Our full trip is London to Florence to Paris
2. We can not find a flight (cheap) to Florence)
We are taking the overnight train to Paris so we are ok with that.
Our Time is limited to 10 days
thanks for all your suggestions ...anything more is greatly appreciated!

How about a cheap flight to Pisa?
You can get there on Ryanair from Stansted. That's very close to Florence and has convenient access.
flanneruk, I tend to view Gatwick as more convenient because I was thinking in terms of staying right near Victoria Station. Thus one avoids the hassle and time of getting to Liverpool Street Station. But I suppose one could stay near Liverpool Street Station. Also the Gatwick Express runs all night without interruption, unlike the Stansted Express, so it's easy for those who like to be at the airport quite early to do that.

I see now that on the Gatwick Express web site that it's not quite all night service - the first train leaves Victoria Station at 0430. I believe that's earlier than the Stansted Express starts, though?

The Meridiana options does sound like an improvement. And regardless of the airport you need to reach, and at whatever hour - - a car/driver is a solution that is great 24/7.
