This topic is debated on here regularly. You will get arguments on both sides.

The total travel time needed is about the same when you take into consideration the hassle of getting to the airport, early check in, luggage retrieval, and transport from the airport. The train stations are in the very center of both cities so you avoid all that. Flying take 3 to 4+ hours (only one hour actually in the air) and the train takes about 4 hours.

The low cost airlines are cheaper than the train, while the train is cheaper than the big airlines. One main problem is that the low cost airlines do not fly LHR to Edinburgh so you would need to go to one of the outlying airports which only adds more time to the journey.
