LONDON TO BATH - Tour or Do it yourself?
Hi, i am looking at some of the prices for a tour to Bath from London. It looks quite expensive for a day. I have heard you can catch a train out to bath quite easily. If so, would you recommend that as an option. Is it worth then picking up a tour while in Bath? Is there a website to look at the tours?
OR
Would you recommend just taking a tour from London to Bath and pay the money.
Appreciate your feedback!!

My personal preference would always be for the flexibility of making my own travel arrangements if at all possible, and it certainly is in this case.
www.nationalrail.co.uk for train times and fares.
Here's a list of tours organised locally in Bath:

Don't rule out www.megatrain.com if you're looking for trains from London to Bath. You'd need to book well in advance (and onto specific trains) to get the best fares though.

Having done it on my own i would suggest the possibility of going by rail, as suggested, AND your doing a little research perhaps with a guidebook or even on the web so you don't need a tour operator once you arrive in Bath.
The place is easy to get around in and the sights pretty easy to find and navigate.

You definitely don't need a tour from London to enjoy Bath. You can spend as long as you want exploring the Roman baths, etc and not be rushed by the tour schedule.
Once you are in Bath most of the sites are w/i easy walking distance. There are also hop-on-hop-off bus tours like the ones in London. Since Bath is built at the bottom of a steep-ish river valley, the bus tour is a good way to get up on the high ground for views across the whole city.

My friend and I took an escorted day tour from London to Bath a couple of years ago. On the way there was an accident on the Motorway which delayed our arrival about an hour. Then there was the option of having lunch with tour or having lunch independently. We decided to have lunch by ourselves but we wasted time finding a suitable place during busy lunch hour. The afternoon was cut short as we had to leave Bath by 300 PM. In hindsight we wished we had taken the train and spent the day in Bath on our own as it is such a pretty town and so interesting. There is also the Jane Austin Centre in Bath which we missed.
