LONDON SITESEEING

We are travelling with our family of 4 adults and 2 children during late December. We have 24 hours of free time (10am to 10 am next day) at Heathrow airport. We would like to hear some ideas to plan our trip.
We appreciate your suggestions on the following.
1. Some comfortable place to stay over night --not far from the airport because our luggage to our final destination will be with us.
2. How to go on a short siteseeing tour to London during our stay.
3. What is a convenient and economical transportation.
4. What are the places to see.
5. What kind of weather we can expect.

Appreciate your response. Thanks.

Problem is that you don't know what the weather will be like, and even if it is dry and not freezing cold, the hours of real daylight that far north are fairly short.

Where are you coming from? How long is your flight to London? How old are the children? Is there anything you are certain you don't want to miss? What is your budget?

I remember thinking how convenient the hop on hop off bus would be for my crew of varying ages.

Weather is likely to be cold, wet and dreary. Could be snow or ice on the ground, dark by 3.30/4.00pm. You can check historical weather online for London in December
http://www.wunderground.com/

You could catch the tube from Heathrow into central London or check out a guided walk on the London Walks website, they also have private tours and there are details of a tour by London black cab -

There is also the London Hop On Hop Off buses, not a big fan but you'd be inside out of the weather. London has lots of wonderful museums and galleries, most free, that could be a good indoor thing to do.

By the way, the tube (London Underground) is the most convenient and economical transportation. Check it out before you arrive www.tfl.gov.uk

There are a number of hotels near the airport and a shuttle to take you to them and back. If you pick a hotel close to a Tube stop, you can drop your bags at the hotel and take the subway for a relatively quick trip to and from London's center.
