When possible arriving at Gatwick (or Luton) makes things a lot easier than Heathrow. Here's why:

You can travel direct to multiple stations in central London via rail which is a lot more comfortable than the tube esp with bags (and an hour ride on a 90 degree F tube us not a good way to start your trip) plus your rail tickets to /from Gatwick will qualify you for 2-4-1 offers independent of your tube fares. Book fares in advance on firstcapitalconnect and claim them at the kiosk at the station.
