London: Mayfair or Knightsbridge

I have been offered 4 nights in London either in Knightsbridge or in Mayfair. Accommodations seem to be comparable - but what about the locations? Which would you choose and why?
Thanks

Are these apartments or hotels. If the latter I would decide based on exact location and services.

If the former - again look at exact location - proximity to the tube is vital.

We often stay in Knightsbridge and like the area since there seem to be more restaurant options - but both are upscale, central areas.

yep - we need the address to tell you anything at all. Basically the two neighborhoods are adjacent to each other - but not all streets are created equal . . . .

One place is right near Harrods, on Basil St, and the other is on Hill Street in Mayfair. Thanks.

I think both are great locations. The Hill St may be a bit farther from the tube station, BUT the advantage is there are multiple tube lines at Green Park; PLUS you can also catch the central Line at Bond St. The Basil St location is only close to Knightsbridge station and you're stuck with just the Piccadilly line.

The BAsil St location isn't that far from Sloane Square tube station. You can use the Circle and District lines from there

Both of these areas are great and actually aren't really that far from each other.

Personally, I'd go for Mayfair as I think the transport links are a bit better.

I've stayed on Hill Street (corner of South Audley St.) several times although not in many years. I liked the area a lot, but the way to Green Park Station isn't very direct. Hyde Park Corner Station is more direct but a bit farther. Basil Street looks to be much closer to Knightsbridge Station. If the walking distances to the tube aren't an issue for you, I think I'd pick Mayfair, but you really can't go wrong in either location.

BTW, we stayed in a flat at 39 Hill Street which is now an all-suites hotel called Berkeley Plaza.

I may be wrong and Janis can correct me as usual but the Mayfair in my mind is rather blah - deserted at night - i'm thinking of the Mayfair around the US Embassy and Berkeley Square - or ain't that Mayfair.

Kensington seems to have more sizzle to it?

When I think of Mayfair I think of the Intercontinental Hotel overlooking Wellington museum on Hyde park. Is this right? If so, I found great places to eat down sides streets very near to the hotel, plus one very stuffy place.

Shepherd Market, Piccadilly, London Hilton, Intercontinental etc - are all in Mayfair. Not deserted.

BNMIB: I'd be very happy in either location - for shopping Knightsbridge is great. For public transport - both are just fine. The transport nod goes ever so slightly to Green Park because 3 very useful tube lines run through that station. For meals both areas are good. I'd pick based on whichever property is nicest.

Thanks, everyone, for your 2-cents! I've decided to go with Basil Street because the apartment is a little bigger and (supposedly) refurbished recently and also because of the proximity to the conveniences of nearby stores. I'll post a report en route or when I get back and let you know if I made the right decision! Now see my related question about meals!
