Looking for a London hotel under $350 a night for 2 for 3 nights - end of journey stay in London close to tube station. something that we can actually put our suitcases down and still have room to walk around the room! this would be June 2020

We have a shoebox suite apartment close to Pancreas for next year we booked on booking.com but mostly go with Premier inn in the UK.

Try Premier Inns (I've stayed at Waterloo, but there are others). Rooms are quite large. Not the "Hub" by Premier, they are great but tiny.

If you want a lot of space check out Dolphin House in Pimlico. Not quite as convenient as Gloucester RD -- but less than a 3-ish minute walk to Pimlico Tube station. Main advantages are the very large rooms and kitchenette plus small shops on site (small grocey, green grocer, news agent, bakery, dry cleaners, hair dresser etc.). The shops support the hundreds of full time residents but are very useful for folks staying in the aparthotel wing. Very good rates. The studios are about 2 or 3 times the size of typical London hotel rooms. There are also 1 and 2 bedroom options. Not at all fancy but a great bargain for London.

The website mentions studios 'from £159 (about $200) but I've usually paid a little less than that - there are often really good deals for it on booking.com. Depending on your specific dates I'd figure on a little less than $200

The Chesterfield Hotel in posh Mayfair. Walk to Green Park Tube Station, London Ritz, The Wolseley, Buckingham Palace, Fortnum and Mason, and Old Bond Street.

It's been a super long time that I've actually booked a hotel in London, since we usually stay with family and friends. That said, this past September, we were spending one night in London after arrival from LA at LHR, and (after booking issues with another property) ended up getting a free (with Chase points) at the newly opened Hard Rock Hotel on Cumberland, around the corner from Marble Arch station. The property used to be the old Cumberland Hotel that had tiny rooms. The developers for the HR really did a magnificent job of remodeling and opening up the rooms, very stylish and modern. Bathroom small, but well presented with lovely toiletries. And everything brand new. Great water pressure in the shower (I say this, having lived in London for years back in the early 80's, they really had the most pathetic water pressure!). The staff is terrific and friendly; late night bar and live music. Also close to my favorite department store, Selfridges, and near numerous pubs I used to visit. You can either walk down to Lancaster Gate or take the Tube one stop and head to the Swan about 100 steps from the Tube on Bayswater, for a lovely pint or Pinot Grigio Blush, and really good fish and chips! Indoor and outdoor (weather permitting) pub.

One more thing: my husband does "everything but the kitchen sink" luggage. And we still had plenty of room to walk around the room!

Very nice property . . . But not in their budget by a long shot. Their teensy 'classic' doubles (less than 140 sq ft) are close to £300 depending on the dates. To get a decent sized room you'd need a junior suite (which still isn't all that large) that runs well over £400. To get any sort of size at all you are talking nearly £700 per night.

Or maybe being who you are, you get a special 'aristocrat' discount . . .

<<Hard Rock Hotel on Cumberland>> Means the Hard Rock Hotel, Great Cumberland Place. Road names are never shortened as they are in the US. In any case, it is way over the OP's budget. But the Mandeville Hotel is within budget. Room sizes are stated on their website.
Or the Rathbone Hotel, close to Goodge Street and Oxford Circus tube stations, room sizes vary, best not to book a small double.

Other hotels that should be in budget are in the Radisson Edwardian group, eg the Grafton (close to Warren Street), the Kenilworth (Tottenham Court Road)
If you want to go super cheap, try the St Giles Hotel on Tottenham Court Road. they have executive size double rooms at 27m2 from about USD180 per night.

We just stayed at the Montague on the Gardens hotel near Russell Square and the British Museum. It's a smaller hotel with great service. We really loved it! Take a look at the reviews here on TA. You might want to check out rates for the dates you are going to be in London. I know they have some package deals, too. Also it's near the Russell Square tube station on the Picadilly Line, so it's an easy trip if you're arriving/departing via Heathrow. It's not too far of a walk to the Tottenham Court Road tube station, also, so you have some options for transportation.

That wouldn't be my preferred area to stay as a tourist. Great that it has an on site shop but anywhere in central London is pretty convenient to a small food shop. They are all over.

On the positive side, I'm sure it's perfectly safe and people may be able to benefit from lower demand and lower prices as a result of the scary legionnaires disease outbreak at this site just a few months ago. It's a large site with many buildings but it's all under the same Dolphin 'brand'. It got a lot of bad press. Considering the deadly situation, I understand they are doing a lot of remediation work so you might want to ensure that there will not be disruptions when and where you stay.

But I'd give that mess a miss and go for a hotel in Bloomsbury, Fitzrovia, Marylebone, Holborn, or further up around St Pancras / Kings Cross. Premier Inn has top ratings for chains in the UK (despite being relatively low cost). Rooms are generally good sized. Service and overall customer experience exceeds many of the much higher cost places. Unfortunately many mid-priced chains and independent hotels in the UK are very poor value.

All top areas to stay but I wouldn't be so pedantic about the street names. When you say Hard Rock Hotel on Cumberland, is there really any confusion that it means Great Cumberland Place? Let's not give potential £ spending tourists the impression that we are a bunch of crusty curmudgeons. These days we have enough problems with public perception and we don't need unnecessary pedantry. Anyway, The Hard Rock is an American institution so what's the harm in referring to its location with a more American flair and less old English curmudgeon pedantry?

It ain't a mess and being next the to the river and walking distance to Tate Britain and Westminster it is hardly a backwater. There is a Michelin starred restaurant just up the street

Since you obviously haven't stayed there, Dolphin Square is a huge apartment block complex around four sides of a pretty garden. Three sides are privately owned/leased. For at least two decades Princess Anne and Adm. Timothy Laurence had one of the flats - not sure if they still live there. The Legionaires outbreak was 3 cases late last spring, in 3 individual flats in the private homes. I have no horse in this race so It doesn't matter to me one way or the other if anyone stays there or not. It is just a decent property in a central London location that has large rooms.

I didn't say it was a backwater. I said that it would not be my preferred location. Yes, it's convenient to Tate Britain, Westminster and a Michelin starred restaurant. You can go three stops to Oxford Circus on the Tube and walk to a lot from there. Just not my preferred location. It's cut off from the heart of London by distances that aren't very walkable. Just not my favourite part of London. You can stay in better areas that are more accessible (see my examples). Others may prefer this location. Just giving my opinion.

I said it was a 'large site' and you say I haven't stayed there because it's a 'huge apartment block'. We're saying exactly the same thing.

'Late last spring'? Actually the outbreak was THIS past summer to avoid confusion over the word 'last'. 4 months ago. I said that it was probably perfectly safe. I would not avoid it based on the recent problems but it's fair to let people be aware as it was a significant outbreak of this relatively rare disease. They are doing emergency work to the place in response. I have no idea if or how the works will be impacting the short term rentals. Sure it's cheap but (rightly or wrongly) it's not got the best reputation due to a fairly recent deadly disease outbreak that was pretty big news.

Princess Ann does not live there any longer. That's part of the history. If you wish to appeal to history, there's plenty of very, very, dark history there. Very, very dark people have lived there. I won't go t&t for tat on that. People can check for themselves if they are interested. It's irrelevant --- as is Princess Ann living there for a time.

Take a look at Staybridge Suites in Vauxhall...I’ve stayed here and had a nice sized room with kitchenette. Nice breakfast downstairs everyday (was included in my room cost) and always free still and sparkling water available. A short walk to Vauxhall tube station which has mini Waitrose and Sainsbury to pick up anything you need for the hotel. Yes it’s south of the river but not miles away, and the walk along the embankment is nice with great views over to Parliament.
