London Alone

You will not be alone! London is overwhelmed with tourists in August. Book your hotel well in advance. Otherwise we shall be tripping over you too on the concourses of our railway stations. London is basically safe but there are districts like any other city where you do not venture at night. In general postal districts SW1, SW3, SW5, SW6 SW7, W1, WC1, WC2 in the centre are ok. Mailbox me if you have any doubts.

You will have no problems in London. Get a Tube pass when you arrive. This will allow you unlimited access to the Underground. Take two extra passport photos for the Tube Pass. The Underground is very easy to negotiate. Get an underground map before you leve and study a little. Everything is color coded. The system works in zones like concentric circles (like an archery target) Most of the places to see are in Zone 1. If you plan to travel outside Zone 1 just buy an extra ticket for that zone. Places like Wimbledon, Wembley, Heathrow, are outside Zone 1. You will do fine.

Have a great trip.

Look up "Walking Tours Of London", or "City Tours Of London", something like that. They offer tours of Parliament, Sherlock Holmes London, Jack the Ripper's London, etc., that are both fun and inexpensive. Also a great way to meet people in the same circumstances as yourself. Enjoy

As a woman who's spent quite a bit of time in London, I can tell you that the Underground is very safe, even late at night. Be careful but you don't need to worry much. The night buses are also quite safe. On weekend nights especially there are usually lots of people around on both the underground and the night buses. Have a good time! E-mail me if you'd like to chat more.

I lived in London for six weeks, and as a woman I felt very safe. If you are going to be doing a lot of on foot exploring, an A to Z Guide is a really helpful purchase for finding your way around the streets of London. Also, don't be afraid to walk on foot instead of taking the Underground for one or two stops. You'd be amazed at what you can "accidentally" discover!!

I used to live in London for a year (NYC now) and it is very safe, esp if you stick to the tourists areas. As soon as you land in London, get the following from any news-store : (1) an "A to Z" (pron "A to Zed") -- this is a comprehensive map of London -- every city should have one; and (2) a copy of a "Time Out" magazine -- this gives you the lastest info on the shows, museums, sports, music, opera, nightclubs, happening events, etc. in London for the week. " For your first day, do a "hop-on hop-off" bus tour of London to get yourself oriented to the city. Buy a weekly/monthly Tube pass (good for all subway, referred to as "the underground" or the "tube", and buses in London) -- the prices will vary by the zones you will be travelling in, however, most of London proper is in zone 1. Food is not too great but try the spicy loster pasta at Scalini's at 1 Walton Place behind Harrods.
