lodging - things to do near Bitburg

Hi we are travelling to Spangahlen, Germany in the next couple of weeks to visit our kids in the Airforce - We want to stay nearby in a hotel - and maybe take off for a 2 day trip on our own. Need advice on lodging in the area and ideas for a 2 day trip. We've never been anywhere in France or Germany. We thought about hopping a train to Paris? Any ideas for an easy car or train trip? OR other advice Thanks much...

Trier just to the south is an interesting city with Roman ruins. Aachen is a very historic city to the north. The Rhine and Mosel rivers are convenient to Bitburg. You could drive through the Battle of the Bulge area (be sure to see The military museum in Diekirch, Luxemburg if you go).

As you can see, there are several options for a 2-3 day trip.

Cheers,

Sorry to be late in getting back to you (we have been "leaf-peeping" in New England). We have stayed in Trier and Aachen. Nothing remarkable. Wish I had more suggestions on accomodations. Google for hotels in that area and see what comes up. Have a great trip.

First I would check with your kids to see if you can get into some temporary lodging on the base. If that is not possible, have them check with the Billeting Office -- where do they send people when the BOQ/BEQ's fill up, and the price range you are looking for.

It's been a while, but they have a huge tours/ticket office on the Base. Your kids can provide some great recommendations. Both Lux City and Trier are good day trips as well as trips up the Rhine & Mosel.
