It looks we have to add a night in Nuremberg (too much daytrip to do for 3 nights) so it means we have to cut a night in Cochem (or any other base town we choose to stay in that region) and it also means we wont make it to Cologne on that trip. Too much travel just for taking a picture of the dom I guess.

While i'm here, do you think 4 nights in Rhine+moselle would be enough (Cochem, Trier, Burg eltz or Marksburg, Cruise on the rhine)? We keep one night at the end for Luxembourg because our flight is leaving from there.

The other option would have been to cut a night in Berlin (we got 5 but we will also be jetlagged !) or in Munich (we got 4).

Four nights means three full days. This is enough to see a lot of sights and attractions in the area, of course. And you will also be able to go to Cologne which has much more to offer than the Dom. For Roman archeology, the museum in Cologne is top-notch, even compared to museums in Italy and Southern France.

The main question is where you base yourself. On the Rhine, there are many picturesque small towns and villages which offer accomodation. One of the nicest villages is Oberwesel. You may look at this hotel:

A base on the Rhine gives you access to the Köln-Düsseldorfer boats on the Rhine.

Also, you can easily take a train into Cologne from any of the towns on the Rhine.

Driving time from Oberwesel to Trier would be 1:30.

The alternative would be staying on the Mosel, somewhere between Cochem and Bernkastel-Cues. Driving time from Cochem to Trier is one hour, but you need some time to get to the Rhine from a base on the Mosel. Also, I find the villages on the Rhine more picturesque.

We're having a hard time figuring how many nights stay in each of our destinations. For dsome 4 nighjts in Mosel+Rhine is enough for others it isn't (i guess it's something predictable).

One thing for sure is that addin in that last part of our trip would mean to cut somewhere else. Also, can ayone show us waht would be the best base for that part of our trip ? Since we are with our two kids we don't want to change lodging every day.

Maybe we could ditch the trip to Luxembourg but since our flight goes from there it would be a pity to not go there in our opinion.

Yes perfect - Burg Eltz and Cochem itself (not much in Cochem itself except its Ersatz castle and a winery to tour and sample) 1 day

1 day day trip to Trier

1 day Cruise on Rhine - get off at Marksburg Castle (Braubach I guess and take lift to castle)

1 day for Cologne

And as I said before you could do Trier as a few-hour stop when going to Luxembourg - leaving another day if you just want to do a short bike ride along the Mosel near Cochem or take the scenic boat from Cochem to Beilstein (over one of the prettiest parts of the Mosel), etc.

If passing thru Koblenz check out Deutshes Eck - a popular place for Germans - the Unity Corner at the confluence of the Mosel and Rhine - formerly the huge plinth held a huge equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm but an American G I blasted it to bits during the waning days of the war - for no military reason - from his encampment on the opposite side of the Mosel - now the plinth holds a statue to German Unity. (Story of GI told to me by the manager of the Koblenz camping place when I stayed there - today's camp is right where the American GI for fun blasted old Kaiser to bits; not sure totally accurate but plausible.)

ride the KD boats to their Koblenz terminus and Deutsches Eck is right there - along a lovely Rhine Ufer or riverside walk. And Koblenz is a nice town with a neat pedestrian shopping zone - train station about a mile from Deutsches Eck.)

I can't figure how we could combine Trier + Luxembourg in one day. Lets' says we leave Cochem early (8:30) we have luggage all day for trier (can we let them somewhere ?) Then we go to Luxembourg at lets says 17:00. We arrive in Luxembourg at 18:00, we have to eat, get our room which leaves us only one or 2 hours to see the city which is not much.

I was thinking of removing one night from our 5 nights in Berlin (like you suggest me in another thread) to add it to the last part of our trip but maybe it's not necessary.

IS cochem the best base for our 4 nights ? Since we will arrive from Munich it's a long train ride.

The fastest connection between München and Cochem takes 5:53, the fastest connection to Oberwesel 4:35. Another reason to stay on the Rhine instead on the Mosel.

You have made a fine itinerary so far and, frankly said, Luxembourg is the least interesting place in your itinerary.

If you drop your rental car in Luxembourg, you have to pay an extra fee. I just checked AVIS, they would charge about 180€ for dropping in Luxembourg. If you want to save this fee, drop your car in Trier and take the train to Luxembourg (53 min, direct).

What you can do:

Leaving Oberwesel (or another place on the Rhine) at 8:30, arriving in Trier at 10:00, storing the baggage in the train station, returning the rental car. Leaving Trier at 13:36 (alternatively 14:36), arriving in Luxembourg at 14:29 (alternatively 15:29). A full afternoon would be enough time for Luxembourg for my taste.

One or two things:

1) I've never said we were getting a car. Should we get one ?

2) 10:00 to 13:36 or 14:36 doesn't seems much for Trier. I've never been there so it's hard for me figuring if it's enough or not. I have to add time for lunch so it take at least one half hour from the time there.

3) We can travel one more hour from Munich if it's mean to be in a nicer and more practical place. I don't say that what Cochem is but I leave that to the advice of people who already been there.

Yes, do get a car.

Cochem to Trier is one hour drive. Leave your luggage in the trunk of your car, and park in one of the Parkhauses. Do a half day of sightseeing in Trier and drive to Luxemburg, which is only a good half hour.

BTW, I prefer Traben-Trarbach or Bernkastel-Kues to Cochem. The nicest part of the Mosel Valley, IMO, is between Bernkastel-Kues and Cochem.

For me it doesn't make much sens to get a car for cochem to Luxembourg. It also means pay a big fee because the drop would be in another country.

No reason to unless you prefer driving over the train and trains or boats will take you anywhere yous want to go.

We plan to stay at the same place for the whole duration of our stay in the Rhine-Mosel region. Cochem is high on the list because we only plan to go on the rhine for a boat ride between bingen and Klobenz.

If we could do Trier + Luxembourg the same day it would have been perfect but it's seems to be too much for that amount of time.

If we could have time for Cologne it would be perfect by i Guess we have to forget that !

Heres the planing

July 30: leave Munich at 9:00, arrival in Cochem at 15:00. Get the appartement, walk a bit in the town
July 31: Cochem (leisure park ? Burg eltz castle ? )
August 1: Boat ride Bingen to Koblenz (can we combine that day with a trip to Cologne)
august 2 : Trier
August 3: Train to Luxembourg and sleep there
august 4: fly back home

Burg Eltz is easily done - take a train to nearby Moselkern and then taxis or mini-buses from there up the hill that one of Germany's most famous castles is on or walk up thru the forests on gently ascending paths from the train station vicinity.

Cochem has its own castle to tour and even though it is Ersatz - completely rebuilt from rubble in the 1800s it still has a nice interior from that glitzy era.
