Lodging suggestions for Kandersteg and Zermatt

We're planning to spend three nights in Kandersteg and four nights in Zermatt in April.

Unfortunately, April is still high season in Zermatt, so most of the hotels I've looked at are 200 CHF and up. I'd prefer to keep it in the 170-180 CHF range if possible. We prefer ***, but that seems unlikely in this range during April, so any ** suggestions appreciated. I'm eyeballing Hotel Antika - any comments on this particular hotel?

Oddly enough, April seems to be low season in Kandersteg, and instead of finding good hotel rates, I'm finding closures. So, any thoughts on where to stay there?

I have stayed a couple of times at the Alphubel in Zermatt. It is not far from the train station and just off the main street. Nothing fancy but a good value. Kandersteg is much more of a summer place so there won't be much to do there in April, hence the closures you have found.

I have not been on Fodors for a while, and it has been even longer sine we were last in Kandersteg, but I could not reccomend Kandersteg more! We have been twice, the last time in 2007. We rented chalet Stuchen in Kandersteg and could not have been happier. A few years earlier we stayed at Chalet Alpentraum. In Zermatt we stayed at the Artist Apartments and had amazing views of the Matterhorn.

Here is a YouTube video of our time in Kandersteg if you are interested:

We used this web sire to find our chalet:

Cheers!

Hi JazzDrew -

We did indeed enjoy Kandersteg - we went in 2009 back when I posted this thread. We stayed at an apartment at the Hotel Adler, which I highly recommend.
