Apartments in the Engadine and Berner Oberland

We will be traveling to the BO and the Engadine Valley (we decided must go there after hearing such wonderful reports from Fodorites!)

We will be with my husband's brother and his wife. We would love to rent a nice apartment with 2 separate bedrooms, a balcony with wonderful views, and a small kitchen in a town in each of these areas from which we could explore.

I would love to hear where you have stayed in these areas and your suggestions. We don't need luxury, but charm, views, and a nice room to visit with each other would be great.

We will be going sometime in mid September through early October so I know it's time to start getting serious!

The Studers' Abendrot in Grindelwald is a delightful place to stay in the Bernese Oberland. We have stayed in their 2-bedroom apt. #033 twice with one balcony facing the North Face of the Eiger and the other facing the Wetterhorn. E-mail: [email protected] Enjoy!

I guess you will go to the Upper Engadine around St. Moritz, right?

Sils and Silvaplana are my favourite places there. I have stayed in the apartment complex 'Da la Posta' in Silvaplana a couple of times and loved it. You can pick a large apartment with two bedrooms there that has balcony with great mountain views (Piz Corvatsch). It's reasonably priced IMO. Sils is more expensive, but also more charming.

You can check apartments on www.sils.ch and www.silvaplana.ch or go to www.interhome.com and pick from their choices.

Thanks Margielou, I have emailed the Studers for some more information. Do you know of a website with pictures of the apartment?

Hotel Bodmi in Grindelwald also rents an apartment and would consider renting it at that time of year for 5 days. I know some insist on a weeks rental. I am waiting to hear from them.

Hi Ingo, I have started checkng out your recommendations, thanks. We are not really set on being around St Moritz. We are considering the Bernina Express one day, or at least driving the route, and we might also like to explore the Swiss National Park ( haven't read much about it yet) Scuol and Guarda, Zuoz, Ardez, Ftan all sound charming, was wondering about using one of them as a base. Or are they too small? In the Engadine we actually wouldn't mind a small hotel if the price was competitive with a rental.

Thanks
Wrenwood

Good morning wrenwood,

So you're maybe heading to Grindelwald! Lucky you!

I've stayed at a couple apartments (one good, one bad), but they only had one separate bedroom.

If you check out grindelwald.com, go to the lodging section, then click on apartments, you will see the entire listing.

Of course, there's also Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, Murren, all having their own websites with links to apartments.

Here is the link for the apartment listed above by Margielou, the Abendrot:

Happy travels!

We stayed at this place last May in Grindelwald. You would need a car. We stayed in the 1-bedroom Apt on the ground floor, the family lives on the middle floor, and there is a 2-bedroom apartment on the top floor with 2 separate king size beds (2 singles pushed together which is normal for the area), a large bathroom, kitchen area, living room, and balcony. I looked at, and it looks nice. While not in the village itself, it overlooks the village of Grindelwald.

Hello again! I have been busy emailing and checking out sites. In doing so I ran across a large apartment in Grindelwald, more room than we need but it actually has 2 full bathrooms! I started getting nervous that we would never get out hiking before 10AM if 4 adults ( esp 2 women!) had to share one bathroom.

I did check out both the apartments that Margielou and Budman mentioned, they looked lovely, it was the bathroom hang-up that pushed me to the other!

In the Engadine I've found Ingo's recommendation of Pension Val Tuoi, so am checking that out. Can't decide which village in the Engadine to stay in, they all look wonderful.

I would definitely recommend Guarda for the Engadine, or one of the other villages between there and Scuol-Tarasp. Much nicer than St Moritz. We stayed in Grindelwald late September last year, and it was an excellent base for BO. Can't recommend apartments though; we stayed in a hotel near the station in Grindelwald and with family in the East.
