lodging in kinsale
we will be in Kinsale July 1/2 and expect from the posts it will be crowded. Any suggestions for great lodging, middle price range in or near town? Our wives will be around town while we check out Old head of Kinsale.

We visited last September. Stayed at the Kilcaw House just outside of Kinsale. Moderate price. Lovely host, Christina Mitchel. It is set on a hill above Kinsale overloking a meadow--15 minute walk to town, 5 minutes by car.
This place was recommended to us by the Heatons who run a grand Guest House in Dingle. If you use Kilcaw's say hello to the Mitchels from the Spinellis.
For dining I recommend "Annelies" in town. Do see Charlesfort for great photo ops, history.

We stayed at the Cephas House last May. Great view again, up the hill, overlooking the habor. The owner was very nice. 10-15 minute walk to town. Here's a link to the my page that mentions it with a picture of the view. You can click on the pic for a larger version. There are a few more pics on the link at the bottom.

Just returned from our trip. We spent 2 nights at Cephas House in Kinsale. Very clean, great view(seaview room with balcony)thanks to advice from Bill. Walk to town was easy, must admit we took a taxi home one night as we weren't sure we'd make it back (one too many guiness). Had a great stay in Kinsale.

I'm glad you enjoyed the place. I always worry about making suggestions because my tastes are many times not what other people enjoy. Still, standing on that balocny and looking out at the bay is hard to beat.

You might want to be right in town so your wives can walk around and shop that very interesting town. We stayed at the Old Bank House in the center of town which was very nice. Could not reserve the Blue Haven (a few doors away) which also has a restaurant. Be sure to have dinner at Man Friday and then a "final final" at the Spaniard where the locals go. They are not shy about the greens fees at Old Head! Be sure to get your tee times before you leave... Will you be playing other golf courses while in Ireland?

The Old Presbytery, located in downtown Kinsale, is another option and it does have off street parking which could be a bonus in July. Be sure to allow some time for Charles Fort if anyone in your group is a history buff.

We drove out to the lighthouse on Old Head -- great views, then drove over to the clubhouse, think just to go in, look around, and have a drink. Maybe I'll get to see the clubhouse this trip if I don't wear jeans.

How did you get to the lighthouse? They wouldn't let us pass and I didn't see another road. I would love to go out there. Wouldn't mind playing golf, but that's a whole lot of $ to spend.

Bill,
I don't know, it just happened. We wanted to go out to see the golf course, and we just happened to see the lighthouse and followed the dirt road to it. Didn't go up it -- just walked around the area. It was just one of those days we were out driving around.

I don't believe that the Cephas House has it's own website. They can be found at:
http://www.townandcountry.ie/premise...remesisid=1971
Whic is Town and Country's site. You can also see pictures of the view at:
http://www.geocities.com/obeirne_ire...03/kinsale.htm
and there are a few more pictures on the more pictures link. Additionally, if you go to the 1st Crookhaven link on the same site and then it's More Pictures link at the bottom, you'll find some pictures there. All of the pics are "clickable" to enlarge.
Hope this helps.

carolina_girl, The Cephas House link worked perfectly for me.
wojazz3, The road out to the lighthouse cuts through the golf course. They now have cut off access to the tip of Old Head of Kinsale since it was bought by the golf course. I understand they are very strict about letting people into the golf course. They want it to be very prestigious and upper crust and don't want the riff-raff around. Maybe you can sweet-talk your way in and drive out to the lighthouse. But I doubt it.

Hello, we visited Kinsale in June, my favorite part of a great trip! I would also recommend the Old Bank House for location...husbands were golfing so we were spent the day exploring the town, which is delightful. One of the highlights of our entire trip was the Scilly Walk, which is close by, followed by a glass of wine at the coffee/wine bar a few doors down.
