First of all, thank you for listing all best old master painting museums. It is very worthy to people who are keen interested in old master paintings. But your criteria was so limited and some of museums from your list are not up to mark .The museum could display their collection in old building ,but the thing that matters a lot is that their collection, which attracts people. In sum up it's very nice post.

I went to the Uffizi yesterday, my 4th visit to the museum.

I'm glad I got to see most of the most important works. (The ones missing are Leonardo's Adoration which is in the restoration and Caravaggio's Sacrifice of Isaac which is on travelling exhibition)

In return, I got to see Uccello's Battle of San Romano, which recently just came out of restoration. I think the restoration did an excellent job in bringing back some of the faded colors. To celebrate for the successful restoration, the Uffizi holds an International Gothic exhibition till December.

I also got to see the recently unveiled the La Tribuna. Visitors can't enter the room now, they can only peek from the 3 doors

To those who said that the Uffizi lacks of paintings from foreign artists, that's not true at all. It just opens 7 rooms for foreign Baroque artists, which includes 4 great Rembrandt self-portraits. All this time these paintings were kept in storage or stashed in small rooms at the end because of lack of space. Now they got their own rooms in the new Uffizi. Besides these, Uffizi also has a pretty good Northern Renaissance collection. Most of the major artists are well represented; Durer, van der Weyden, van der Goes, Memling, Cranach, Altdorfer, Gerard David, etc.

In general non-Italian Old Masters tend to get overshadowed by Italian artists, and that's especially true in the Uffizi. Look at van der Goes's best work for example, The Portinari Triptych. That massive piece (3x5M) is among the best of Northern Renaissance works, and yet it practically got ignored by the crowd who are occupied with Botticelli's Venuses (why did they put van der Goes vs Botticelli in the same room, I have no idea, maybe because of space) Same fate for the van der Weyden's piece in the same room, no one noticed it.

Overall I'm very satisfied with my Uffizi visit. I will make another trip to the gallery before I leave town in a few days.

Hi Gregpole1, thanks for the comment.

It's true that the museum building should never outdo the collection. Quality of the collection is first and foremost. But that's how new museums are like nowadays, in order to make up for the lack of quality of their collection, they build beautiful buildings to attract visitors.

In your opinion, which of the galleries in my list are not up to the mark, I will make a case for them.

Hi, foodor!

Thanks for coming back and reporting on the paintings that you ahve seen.

I looked up the Battle of San Romano:

It's certainly an interesting painting, an action-filled piece.

A couple of questions:

a) Does that elephant have two trunks?

b) As an example of Italian perspective, since you like the Old Masters, is this perspective achieved with the two running rabbits and the man in the back stabbing something?

1. The horse's 2 back legs? I dont see any elephant, unless it's in one of the dark areas.

2. Actually Uccello struggled with perspective massively with these paintings. He still couldn't figure out the concept of vanishing point in perspective. So his images come off as flat decorative patterns (just like Botticelli's) Personally I like because it does have a fine composition. It's colorful, but it's unified. The recently restored painting is much better from the image that you linked

Just wanna add, there should not be any elephant in the painting, because he depicted a real battle in the history, and that battle didn't use any elephant

I just wanna add, I visited the newly restored and unveiled Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise the other day. It's a very imposing piece. It's nearly 3 stories high, and the gold color is brilliant. The piece should be regarded as monumental as Michelangelo's David in its own right

here's the pic I took

Shifting through my trip photos, I found this pic of Paolo Uccello's Battle of San Romano at the Uffizi after the restoration. You can see how different it is between before and after restoration
