Lisse, Holland
I am going to Holland and am looking for a place to stay near the Floriade. Has anyone been to Lisse? Can you suggest a place to stay or give me any information about this town? Also, what is the weather like in August? Thanks so much.

Haarlem is the city closest to the Floriade.
It has a fairly large number of hotels, from small and simple to the more upscale. Here's the tourist office's website for that region: http://www.vvvzk.nl/nl/index_nl.htm

Lisse (where the Keukenhof gardens are) is 16 km further south. I guess there won't be much to see in Lisse in August. Tulips bloom around April/May.

Weather: it may be nice and warm (like today, 85°F) or cold and rainy (like last week, 68°F). Totally unpredictable.

Lisse..drove through there once, when the trains were cancelled. Looks smallish and flowerish, heard it's kinda boring. Haarlem is great (I'm totally biased as I've been living there for a while), conveniently located for the Floriade and fifteen minutes on the train to central Amsterdam. The Amadeus hotel on grote markt is cheap, nice enough and five minutes from train/bus station. Weather in August's likely to be great, with occasional rains I guess.

The Floriade lies between Hoofdoorp and Haarlem. Buses run there regularly from Haarlem and from Schiphol, and the busfare is included in the entry price. So, anywhere along the train lines with easy connections to Schiphol will be convenient. Amsterdam is only a short train ride away, but if you want to save about 50 euro a night, stay in an outlying town. We chose Leiden, which was convenient to Lisse for Keukenhof (now closed) and about 20 minutes by train from Schiphol. See
http://www.floriade.nl/
http://www.ns.nl/domestic/index.cgi
