I was advised to stay away from the area around Chelas after dark.
I usually stay at Residencial Estrela do Saldanha on Avda. de Independencia at Metro Saldanha. Carlos Ferreira co-owner/Manager speaks passable English: e-mail [email protected]

Sorry! It's Avda. de la Republica, 17. I haven't had any problem getting a taxi in front, even at 4:00 AM.
I have also stayed at Residencial 5 de Outubre (about 2-blocks east). There's usually a cab driver sleeping in his car in front between 4-5 AM.
As for noise level, I've never had any problem at either of those places.

I looked at the website and the prices are very reasonable. I sent a request for room availability.
Our plane takes off at 7:30 am, so I don't think we need to leave quite that early. But it is nice to know we can go to the airport easily.

Topping this for Nedsireland, hoping it will catch your eye.
I contacted the hotel twice. Both by email with the address you listed and by the one listed on the hotel site.
Have you made reservations by email. Can you give me an idea if they respond in a timely manner.
I can call them, but thought I would try email first.
Thanks

Hi lobo_mau. Just checking into rates in Lisbon. We were planning to stay at the Marriott because we get a very good rate. But it is a little out of the way.
I thought the hotel Nedsireland suggested seemed to be a fair price and it is looks to be in a better area for seeing the sights.
I will take any support I can get. We have all of the other reservations including the car. Just filling in for Lisbon.
Do you have other suggestions? I can get a rate at the Marriott for 69 Euro per night. The do Saldanha is actually about that price. I normally would be suspicious, but I feel safe taking his advice because he has stayed there before.
Thanks.

Sorry lobo_mau! I think you have pointed out a grammatical error on my part in the past. As is evident, I'm not fluent in Portuguese.
If I could get a 69-Euro rate at the Marriott, I would jump on it! Carlos (Estrela do Saldanha) doesn't have any parking facilities. Also, it's not a Hotel - more like a Hostal.
He's usually pretty prompt in replying to e-mail inquiries (unless he is in Rio de Janeiro).
BTW
69-Euro is almost $95 (USD) at current exchange rates: $1.32 USD = 1-Euro. Of course, that can change for the better (or worsen).
