Lisbon Hotels w/Charm & Central Location but NOT $$$$$$$
Plan to be in Lisbon, arriving 6/7 and departing 6/12. DH and I are in late 60's and like to stroll, people watch, see major attractions, and eat in local, small restaurants. I have not been able to find hotel suggestions except for Avenida (good location and good breakfast but maybe a little pricey). Also, the Bon Jardim restaurant for chicken has come highly recommended.
We had a fantastic hotel when we went to Amsterdam - suggested through you folks - smallish, centrally located, good price. Hopefully, you Fodorites have some good places for Lisbon.

I'll be in Lisbon next week and will be staying at the Hotel Lisboa Plaza. I've never stayed there before, but it came recommended to me from a tour guide friend. If this property isn't to your liking, they have several other properties in their small chain.

I did alot of research for a trip last May and was looking forward to staying at Eurostars das Letras - liked the literary theme and seemed a good location. However before my trip I changed my mind and decided to stay in Cascais and was glad I did. So I never stayed at Eurostars das Letras. On an earlier trip we stayed at Vincci Baxia and it was pleasant, in a slightly different part of the city.
We did eat at Bom Jardin - a little rushed, not leisurely dining. We tried the chicken at other restuarants too, was always tasty. Another wonderful taste treat - whole roasted fish - I want to go back to Portugal for that dish alone!

Try the Residencial Florascente, just around the corner from Bom Jardin.

I'm staying there in October, and my friend (a fellow Fodorite) is too, and she stayed there last year for a week and really liked it.

The last time we were in Lisbon we stayed at Brown's Hotel. It is a small hotel in Baixa, very centrally located.
The beds are super comfortable and king sized, the amenities (towels, toiletries, etc,) top notch.
We booked on Booking.com and found a very good rate.
We are in our mid 60's.
Each room has an Apple ipad and Apple computer for your use free. Most of the rooms come equipped with a mini kitchenette and also some have washing machines.
I believe they are also well reviewed on trip advisor. Check it out. They do not provide breakfast.
The company that is opening these hotels (I believe they now have two) is reclaiming buildings in the downtown and renovating them.
I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Between the two hotels is a top notch coffee shop and also they run a small sandwich shop with is pretty good.

We had good luck with Hotel VIP Eden in a very central location on Praca Restauradores...Avenida Palace is next door, it's just minutes from the "eating lane" where Bom Jardim is located, Praca Rossio and the train station. Rooftop pool with great views over the city... elevators, etc. The price is right. (Funicular to Bairro Alto is next door).

The Eurostars das Letras is an interesting and nice hotel - quite modern and nicely decorated. It felt a little out of the way for touristy things. But we were only there for one night before leaving Lisbon.
I don't know what your budget it, but the Hotel Britania is also a very nice hotel just off Avenida da Liberdade and very near a metro stop.

I've stayed at the Lisboa Plaza, and it's very nice.
Pros:
- many rooms face a botanical garden behind the hotel, with tall tropical trees and plenty of pretty-sounding birds (not noisy, just pretty).
- Rooftop deck is small but lovely with an honor bar.
- Breakfast is large and quite good.
- Sitting areas and bar on the first floor are spacious.
- About 2-3 blocks from the train station and the core of the Baixa
- Just off a major avenue, but no traffic noise at all in our back-facing room
- A few steep blocks from a nice wine bar up the hill
- The bathroom in our room was quite spacious
Cons:
Not as bright and airy as their photos make it look. A bit dark.
Not a "hip" boutique hotel, with a really modern flair (not necessarily a con.)
Because it's so close but not really in the heart of the Baixa, we got shin splints because we'd always just think "we should just walk everywhere" including the six or so blocks up the hill to the Barrio Alta neighborhood. Then again, we didn't gain any weight on that trip

The Avenida Palace was how much? I don't recall exactly what we paid for a double, but it was quite reasonable. The breakfast buffet is a complete brunch that filled us up till dinner, with just a small snack in between. So figure in how much that meal saves you, and the room price might look better!
We loved that hotel.

At the Avenida Palace, you're in the lap of recent history. During and before WW II, it was known widely as a den of spies. Espionage activities in both Estoril and Lisbon was right out of a B movie...cloak and dagger ruled. It's quite a handsome property and very well located. As I said above, we stayed next door at the VIP Eden.
