Lisbon/Cascais hotel Pestana....anyone stayed there?
I am wondering if anyone has stayed at the Pestana Atlantic Gardens in Cascais,Portugal?...and what feedback you might give. It looks lovely, and has good reviews on Trip Advisor...however we would like any personal recommendations. We lived in Lisbon for 2 years , 28 yrs. ago, and are going back to visit for the first time....for 4 days in Nov. Will stay 2 in downtown Lisbon, and 2 nights out the coast in Cascais. There are lots of new hotels NOW...and I KNOW things have changed. What a lovely country!!!

Mari,
Can't help you out directly, but you may get some help by contacting another Fodors correspondent who lives near Cascais: [email protected]
I'm planning a trip there also- probably next October. We, likewise, lived there (Cascais) for (4) years, but that was 35 years ago. Freinds that returned said not to go back as everything has changed and it's not like it was. But, we've got to do this anyway as we have such fond memories. Change is enevitable everywhere, so it may be a new experience.
We are planning on about and would like to spend time in the North or go to Madiera (which we never go to see while there).

Mari,
I hit the wrong key and fired off my message without finishing. We are planning on two weeks. When we lived in Cascais, there were two main hotels: Palacio and the Estoril Sol (can't find this name anywhere now- must have been taken over). There was another one named Cidadela which is now Best Western. None of our favorite restaurants are listed as such except the Setais Palace, so elegant. Our favorite in Lisbon was the Veranda do Chancillere(spelling?)-forgot the exact name. It was overlooking the city from the St George side. Appreciate hearing from you on your experience.
Regards,
Gerry

A few years ago we stayed at the Cidadela and loved it. A bunch of military wives all flew over and met our husbands on a port stop and we all stayed at this hotel. The welcome we received was truly amazing! The hotel itself was nice, although definitely not upper end...but the people there made all the difference! The entire time that we stayed there, they bent over backwards to offer help for the area and it was so sincere.

We, too, are considering the Pestana Atlantic Gardens. We last stayed in the Cascais area in 1990 at the Estoril Eden in Monte Estoril. Loved the hotel and the experience; don't know if we could handle the uphill climb from the Jumbo anymore. Don't recall seeing the Atlantic Gardens on that trip. Has anyone considering this hotel been able to call up a map to locate it?
Glarson, I did find the Estoril Sol on one website, possibly Eurowave, can't remember. We stayed there, too, years ago.

vcl,
No, I have not found a local map of the hotel locations, there must be one- you could try calling the Portuguese National Tourist Office in N.Y. If you have any luck, please let me know.
I also heard that the Estoril Sol has been or was being torn down. Was new in the 60's and likely given way to new and better as it sat on an excellent spot.
