Lil B's trip report of Italy
My daughter is going to post her trip report for Italy. I told her to wait until Fodors gave me the o.k. since I have never seen a trip report from a kid. She loves to sing and write, and she says this story is for all those 9 yr old's or older who want to read it. She is the youngest of 3...21 year old boy, 17 year old boy and Lil B the 9 yr old. Even though it starts out trip report of Italy and Greece, she has only written about Italy. My trip report has already been posted (Family of 5 just back from Italy and Greece)and all along she had one also. It's not that long so here it goes.
My Italy Trip
This is my journal of Italy and Greece. My name is Lil B and I am 9 years old. Well anyway.....
I am on AirNewZealand Flight 2. It's so cool. They have alot of knee space and they have t.v.'s in every seat and where you put your arm they have a remote control that can let you watch 50 movies of your choice!! And you can pause the movie if you have to go to the bathroom. You can also play games on the t.v.'s I thought this flight was awesome. It's important to bring eyepatches, soft ones will be fine.
The flight is cool and we are now landing in my favorite city, LONDON! It's my favorite because this is where the paddington bear was born. Even though I am tired we have a 6 hour layover before we go to Venice, but I can shop and buy another Paddington Bear. I love airport's,so much is going on and there are so many people to talk to.
Later that day, I'm in Heathrow and it's time to shop! My dad goes crazy on shopping. I love it. We bought alot of stuff. We found one shop that has Paddington's.
After shopping we went on Easy Jet. Nothing Special.
I slept on the plane because I hardly slept on AirNewZealand.
Finally we arrived in Venice after flying for 2 or 3 hours. Now we take a boat to our hotel the Palace Bonvecchiati.
Next day we got up around 9 and went to the hotels restaurant for breakfast. The breakfast was huge!
Next we met Michael Broderick our tour guide. We learned about how Venice was formed and how the gondolas are a very important part of the people of Venice. Then we went to the Roman house that was huge. It is private to get in and we got in and we were all alone in this house. The cool thing about this house are that the steps go right down into the water. You could just bring your boat right up to the steps. That is just awesome.
Next day we went on a vaporetto .Then we went to our hotel then to lunch and then we went to St.Marks Square and to the bell Tower. That was really neat to see all of Venice. We were at the very top. After all of that touring we went to dinner.
I don't remember anything we ate in Venice because it wasn't great. My brother loved the food , but it was o.k. for me.
I will now skip to our next day in Milan. We went on a tour with Lorenza Scorti. She was so much fun. I even sang an aria for her in front of the Opera house. She was not boring like Michael Broderick. But, Michael was very nice to me, he just used alot of words that I did not understand. In fact I would just daydream when he talked.
We saw all of Milan, or maybe just the cool part. Lorenza told us the bull tile was famous and that if you put your heel in the bull tile and spin around you will have good luck. After all the touring we went to eat lunch. We ate at an Italian fast food place. In the other story my mom wrote, there is a picture of me eating this huge piece of pizza.
I had gelato after. Just to give you a HUGE tip Gelato is better than ice cream, that to me was the best food. Then we went into the huge church ,the Duomo. The one thing I remember about that church is that they have the nail that went into Jesus. The church has it in a special place in the ceiling and they have it surrounded by a red light. Every year they take it down to worship. I wished I could have seen the nail. But I will always remember that. After that we went to see the Last Supper. Lorenza got to come in and see it too. That is the biggest painting in the world, I think. Everyone is talking about is it St.John next to Jesus? or Mary.? It looks like a girl to me.
The next day I didn't write about anything so it must not have been interesting.
I'm just going to skip on to Rapallo. We took the train to Rapallo and we missed our first time because we were on top of the roof of the Duomo. It was so cool to be up on top of the Duomo.
Today is the first day in Rapallo and we are staying at the Excelsior hotel. It is so beautiful. We are on the water. The hotel is so big, I love it.If you go to the Excelsior you must meet Camilla. She is so pretty and so nice. I miss her already. Everyday in Rapallo was wonderful because we did not have to tour. But there was one day in Rapallo that was just something that will stay in my mind all of my life. It was the day that I got stung by the Medusa!Jellyfish! The day started like this, I wake up and ask my brother who is 17 to go to the pool with me.He is in a bad mood, so I later go ask my dad and he says' I will only go in the Ocean. I did not want to go in the Ocean. But I decided to go with my dad. My mom was working on something so she couldn't go. SO we all go , brother at last minute goes, my dad and me. We go down to the place where you can dive off and my brother says someone was saying something to him in Italian but he doesn't know what the guy is saying.(probably there is jellyfish in the water) My brother suspected something was wrong, but my dad said no nothing is wrong lets go swimming. Just as we are swimming and we are close to the dock that is out in the middle of the ocean I get stung really bad on the backs of my legs.Thighs. I screamed right into my dads ear. He was deaf for one day.LOL But the stings on my legs are not funny.
So my dad looks at it and decides it's pretty bad and we need to get to a doctor. But I am not swimming back to the hotel. We are stuck on the dock in the middle of the ocean. Luckily there is this kid in a paddle boat near by and he comes to rescue us. I was not going to touch the water again. So we all went in the boat to shore. It was so bad I could not even sit down. So we went to our room, got mom to go with us to go to the doctor and right away Camilla came up and had a taxi for us.She said there was an attack of Medusa's.So she told us where to go and we went and got some cream and stuff. He was the only doctor in town. That was a LONG day.
I really liked Rapallo and would go back to the Excelsior but not go into the ocean. They have a really nice pool there so that would be fine for me.
That is my trip report, my mom typed it while I read it to her. I really like to travel and our next trip will be back to New York and Georgetown and Boston to visit colleges at Christmas. So I know my mom will be asking questions of you guys. She is obsessed with Fodors.
Thanks,
Lil B

Thank you, Lil B, for sharing your thoughts and feelings about Italy. I'm sorry about the jellyfish business, but it sounds like you enjoyed your trip except for that.
And thank you, mom, for encouraging your daughter to record her thoughts and then sharing them with us. Just precious!

anamaria and Lil B....good reporting Lil!
Going to look at colleges...I guess it's for your 17 year old son and brother...what schools are you going to visit in Boston? Take a look at my alma mater, Emerson College...my granddaughter graduated Emerson last year..she's a California girl but loved her four years in Boston.

TOWER, Some of the schools are looking at 17 yr old for his athletic abilities(Football,Quarterback and Basketball)
I have heard of Emerson and will check it out. We are meeting either basketball coaches or football coaches, and guess what? Lil B will be right in the middle of it all..Oh to answer your question ,in Boston we are looking at BC and BU and maybe Harvard, but he doesn't have the grades for Harvard, so we will see.

anamaria...
I took my Master's program at BU..fine school...so is BC..but unless your son has made a few All Star teams in either sport, and has phenomenal statistics during his years, BC and BU won't
give him much, if any, attention. They go after local kids with a lot of press.
On the other hand, Emerson is a 3,000- student school, belonging to a Div. III, good small conference for baseball, basketball, cross country, etc. and doesn't go after the big names because no scholarships are offered that I know of. Granddaughter was co-captain of the CC team and ran three Boston Marathons, also. I played baseball at EU back in the early 50's..and also was a high school baseball and baskeball coach after graduating (Colorado and Massachusetts). Good Luck.

(if at Emerson, see Barbara Rutberg, Director of Alumni Relations and tell her I sent you...she can arrange meetings with the coaches). Write me for her office phone number and give me son's name and background so I can prep her:

Wow , Thanks Stu. He is All Star caliber. He just doesn't know if he wants to go east coast. But he is intrigued in how Georgetown is interested in him. He has never seen Boston so this will be fun in introducing him to Boston. I will talk to the organizer(DH) and e-mail you.
And Thank you again.,

Lil'B and Anamaria...I would love to recommend two books that my daughter, now 16 loves. She has always kept journels and also loves to travel (and keeps special journals for her trips).
Here are the books:
Diary of Melanie Martin by Carol Weston
and
Melanie Martin Goes Dutch.
They are a journal format. She read the first one in 5th grade prior to her first trip to Italy - it is about Melanie Martin's trip to Italy.
The other book is about her trip to Amsterdam. My daughter has yet to part with these books and every once-in-a-while I see them on her chair because she just loves rereading them.
So, if you haven't read them already you may want to check them out. Happy travels.

Stu.,
Small school in Southern California. He was playing the varsity quarterback since he was a freshman.(bumped the upperclass quarterback,Junior) He also plays safety. Even though we are small, it's very competitive. The school is actually known for it's rigorous academia. Many east coast teachers at this school. In basketball he was the leading scorer(last year) in the entire league..not just the school.Beating all of the juniors and senior. There has been some interest in him with both sports. But believe me our family will just be happy if a sport can Help him get into college. He is studying chinese like his brother and actually wants to go live in China for one year, just like big brother.
look at this cool clip.We were losing with 30 seconds left in the game and he put this up in the air and we won the game..that's what I call clutch! A student took this picture and of course he was so excited we won, well it's a little wobbly.
