Letterkenny, Donegal, Ireland next week - suggestions please!

Hi all,

My wife and I will be travelling to Donegal this coming weekend for a week (arrive in Belfast on Sun 19 OCt, then drive a rental car to Letterkenny, depart from Belfast on Sun 26 Oct).

Background:
- We'll be based in Letterkenny for the whole week (at the Raddison SAS Hotel).
- My wife is 29 weeks pregnant so we won't be doing much walking, we'll try to take it easy.
- As we'll be taking day-trips we don't intend to go outside of Co. Donegal.

Questions:
- Any suggestions on what we should see in Letterkenny/Donegal area?
- What clothes should we take? Would jeans +sweater +raincoat +sneakers suffice?
- anything else?

So far I'm thinking I'd like to see:
- Giant's Causeway
- Slieve League Cliffs
- just driving along the west coast
- Any castles worth seeing? (other than Glenveagh which we might visit anyway)
- and?

Thanks for any advice!!

If you don't intend to go outside Co. Donegal, you'll have a problem getting to the Giant's Causeway!

Almost without exception, wherever you go in Donegal is good for lovers of rugged mountain scenery and rocky coastline -- except, I'm sorry to say, the town of Letterkenny.

Bring raingear, including suitable footwear.

One good motoring excursion: a circuit of the Inishowen Peninsula, all the way up to Malin Head. Look out for Grianan Aileach as part of your day's programme http://unknownswilly.orgfree.com/grianan.html

There is stunning scenery on the Glencolumbkille Peninsula (where Slieve League is). Explore that area a bit, things like driving down to Teelin Pier. To get there from Letterkenny, take the route via Ballybofey and Donegal town and enjoy the Barnesmore Gap. If you can make the time, divert to drive around Lough Esker. Good castle in Donegal town, worth a visit.

Thanks Padraig!

I was aware Giant's Causeway is not in Donegal I should have said I don't intend to drive as far as south of Donegal, due to time constraints. But I'll defintely try to take a day to visit Derry
(as I know someone there), Bushmills and Giant's Causeway...

Thanks for the good route suggestions!!

I hope a visit to Glen Veagh is more than a "might." It's lovely.
