I have nothing to add other than agreeing that it should differ depending on each Canton more or less. I have asked my genevoise colleague how it works it Geneva. She said you have to go to the police for that. Police? I wondered but she should know better than me + her husband is a policeman. Then I checked on Geneva city's site : Police indeed, + a boat company and certain fishing shop can sell you 1 day-permit. This 1 day-permit costs CHF10 and children CHF5. Also river fishing is CHF20.00 and is issued only 01June - 31 December. You can even buy it on the web site paying with your CC. Longer (monthly, seasonary, yearly) permits seem a bit more complicated. This is about Geneva. Canton of Lucerne might do a similar (or not?).

Did you read above? Go to "fishing". According to it, it's free if done under the mentioned conditions (rod, etc).

But interestingly I have an conflicting info from another colleague of mine who is from Lucerne. She said it's been a longtime when she fished at home but as far as she remembers : you can get day permit at only one fishing shop but it's quick and easy. She does not remember the name. It could be the sports shop Swandav mentioned above. It used to cost like CHF 15 for a day-permit. Even if it's not the right shop I'm sure they can lead you the the right one. Also consider asking by e-mail to Lucerne tourist office (in English). They have been prompt and helpful to me in the past.

I did not read above site I posted myself. It says the tourist office delivers licence for certain forms of fishing. So all the more reason to write to the tourist office and ask your quesitons.

Great help from all-thanks a bunch.
I've GOTTA find something with all this info. The guide from upstreamflyfishing.com recommended by "enzian", also said to contact the
tourist bureau in Lucerne, (www.luzern.org). He said in Bern you can fish from the shore on the lakes without a license. How great would that be after all this?! I'll let ya'll know.
By the way, we're staying in a cottage on a sheep farm on the shore of Lake Lucerne. We could never have found a more perfect locale and the price is right! We'll have plenty of pix if anyone is interested...

Thanks again.

"By the way, we're staying in a cottage on a sheep farm on the shore of Lake Lucerne."

Sounds great, but don't let them pull the wool over your eyes.

Will look forward to pictures and your review of the place. Lake Lucerne was one of the places we missed on our last Switzerland trip, so will be interested on how you enjoy your stay.

I second congrats to you for keeping your sense of humor! I think you have everyone on board now; hook, line and sinker.

Hello whitneykt, although I haven't fished in ages I have been reading this thread (and your other one, lol).
You do have a good sense of humor!

Your trip sounds lovely and a cottage on the shore of Lake Lucern sounds wonderful. I will be looking for your photos..also a good tale about the fish that got away!! Enjoy your time in Switzerland.

Well, you've added a new dimension to travel in Switzerland for many of us. It sounds like it will be a lot of fun.

Now I'm curious what you will fish for---looks like the lakes offer trout, pike, perch, and Zander, or pike-perch (delicious, by the way. I wonder if it is a kind of Walleye?) Will you also try the streams for grayling?

I appreciate all the info and input from all ya'll, (yes "janisj", you too).
I've narrowed it down and contacted the Luzern Tourist Board like some of you suggested, so I'll let you know what they say.
And I'm gonna fish for anything that wants ta jump on my hook. Lakes, streams, wherever I'm allowed. To "Loveitaly", well they're all gonna "get away" cuz I'm a catch and release guy, but I'm sure I'll have a BIG fish tale, so stay tuned.
And if ya'll make it over Amarillo way,
we'll all have a big fish fry, cuz Texas catfish are too ugly to throw back, might as well eat em!
Thanks for everything...
Goin' fishin', not just wishin'!
