Less see, more do

My wife (wee) and I (dig) are planning a trip to Italy in the spring. We will be taking camping gear, renting a car and will mix up the trip with a couple days camping, day in nice hotel, day in pensione, etc. We will work our way from Venice and Lake Garda to Palermo in Sicily in about 16 days. We did this in Portugal last year and it was worked wonderful!

I've read about things to see, but we have found that going from church to museum to gallery to church tires us out without really feeling like we've 'done' anything. We are more inclined to find things to do. We want to get fully immersed in Italy, and we definitely practice the 'when in rome...' philosophy. Is there any active experiences unique to Italy that anyone can recommend?

One thing I'll have to do is race - does anyone know a good Italian karting track (locals' track, not tourist track)?

Also, we are foodies and know that there are two restaurants in Italy awarded 3 (count'em!) three michelin stars! Al Sorriso and Dal Pescatore. We'd love to hear from anyone as to their experience at either cuz I'm pretty sure we'll only be able to afford one or the other.

Thanks.

Boy this is a hard one. Let's see. See Michaelangelo's David or ride a go cart. What would I rather do. Why are you going to Italy if you dont want to see the masterpieces.?

He said "one thing he had to do" Kate - not the only thing. We all - well, maybe not you - have enjoyable activities that might seem silly to others. You sound like a snob - a being that you ain't paying - you should keep your comments to yourself....

While my name is not kate, I do have a thought about this.
Which is, that Observer thinks that one of the kates should keep her comments to herself. Which is what these forums are for, voicing ones comments to questions posted.
For that matter- Observer could keep its comments to itself also.

lest we digress - sounds like a great trip - why should anyone care if they want to drive go-karts - unfortunately I don't know of any professional tracks in Italy - sounds like fun, you never know who you might meet or crash into

After you get thru all the "junk" posted here, you might consider the Cinqueterre. I would consider that a more "do" than "see" as you describe. You can hike between the towns. This area is on my list. Friends went last year and loved it. Stayed in a small, inexpensive hotel and just wandered. Look up Rick Steves' travel book to Italy that covers that area.
