Left Bank best section 5th or 6th
We are looking for a hotel next April for $100 or under, that would not be too far from the Metro, restaurants (not too pricey), EZ to walk at night. Can't think of anything else. <BR><BR>I have looked Muguet (thought it might be too far west), someone said it's not on the most convenient Metro line.<BR><BR>Hotel du College de France is booked.<BR><BR>No TV in Grades Ecoles, sorry I need some news.<BR><BR>Familia - is this too far to the East? I know the rooms are sound proof so maybe noise wouldn't be a problem. At least some floors have walkout balconies. That sounded good.<BR><BR>We are not college kids. We are in our 60's.<BR>We like to dance, have fun and are in bed by 11 p.m.<BR><BR>I guess in late April we don't need to have A/C?<BR><BR>The other hotel I liked was Caron de Beaumarchais which is near Hotel de Ville and <BR>across from the Left Bank at $118. But it sounded like the Left Bank would be more fun for the p.m.<BR><BR>Open to suggestions.

Marge -<BR><BR>We have found the Magenta Line #4 (St. Michel Stop) very convenient. Almost everywhere we went was either a straight shot or only one change. St. Michel stop is also hooked up to the RER for Versailles so it makes that trip easier if you are going there.<BR><BR>We have stayed twice at the Hotel D'Albe. A double was $115 per night in 1999. It's a very, very central location and the St. Michel Metro stop is very close to the hotel. Across a small alley/road and around the corner.<BR><BR>Go to their site; hotelalbe.fr<BR><BR>Highly recommend the hotel. Good price for a room with full bathroom "ensuite" and a small boutique feel. Not a large place and in a very old, historic building (of course most things are!) but they do have an elevator. Albiet a small one! It's across the street from a place where Napoleon used to live.<BR><BR>Good Luck,<BR><BR>Lynn<BR><BR

Grand Hotel des Balcons in the 6th. They have a website at www.balcons.com. Great location, great breakfast, well within your price range, English-speaking staff, TV & phones in the rooms & some have small balconies. I just got back and really enjoyed it.

Well, I'm not crazy about the 5th myself due to tourists/kids and all the trashy stores etc. The Familia is too far east for me, I don't find that location convenient, although partly I don't like that street very well (rue des Ecoles) or that part of it. I stayed near the Maubert stop and thought that was a little inconvenient but it was a lot better. There are few hotels around there you could consider, like the Abbatial St-Germain (or their sister property but I forget its name), it is a pretty good location. The Grand Hotel St-Michel is also pretty decent from what I've heard, it's very attractive from outside and a great location near the Luxembourg RER stop but down a side street so not so noisy (over $100 somewhat, I think). I think the Muguet might be a little inconvenient because you'd have to change trains at La Motte Piquet to get to St-Germain, but it's not that bad, but if you want to walk home quickly, you can find stuff closer. Others I can think of that are very conveniently located but you'd have to check prices are Parc St Severin, the Cluny Sorbonne, the Trois Colleges and the Cujas Pantheon. I know a few a little nicer, but def. over $100. I agree the Balcons is a good idea.

I would stay in the 6th. Hotel Fleure looks very nice...checked it out last month for future use. Very good price-point.<BR><BR>I have only ever stayed in the 6th, so I'm not speaking from experience. BUT, for me, the 5th is a little too 'iffy', and I don't enjoy walking around that section at night.

Thanks again all.<BR>Christina & Jen, The 'iffy' was what I was wondering about. I found a great website hotelboulevard.com and am looking at Elysa Luxembourg or Hotel Saint Paul they are near Luxembourg and not too far from RER.<BR><BR>Anyone have any comments on these?

The actual name of the hotel mentioned earlier is Hotel de Fleurie. It looked beautiful on its Web site, but alas, was too pricey for the dates we're going. Another good Web site for hotels in the 6th is www.smallandelegant.com. Hotel Le Regent is 750FF (less than $100) for a standard double.

Marge hello! Two places that are as well in your price range would be:<BR><BR>"Le Clément"<BR>Rue Clément<BR>6th, Métro: Mabillon<BR>28 rooms, A/C<BR>Doubles FF 600-700<BR>Tel. 01 43 26 53 60<BR>Fax. 01 44 07 06 83<BR><BR>"Le Récamier"<BR>Place Saint-Sulpice<BR>6th, Métro: Saint-Sulpice<BR>30 rooms, no A/C (but not necessary in April)<BR>Doubles 500-640<BR>Tel. 01 43 26 04 89<BR>Fax 01 46 33 27 73<BR><BR>Both places are very well located, in the heart of St. Germain-des-Prés, close to metro stops, restaurants, shops, etc. Very important: book asap, because all these small boutique hotels are well-known and indicated in a lot of travel books, so they get booked up very quickly from people all over the world.<BR><BR>In my personal opinion, the 6th has more class and style than the 5th. The Quartier Latin is fine for very young people.<BR><BR>Good luck!

Marge, I have responded elsewhere on this topic, but I think both the Elysa Luxembourg and the St Paul are fine choices. I was going to suggest the St Paul but thought it was over $100. The Elysa Luxembourg is in an area I like a lot better then the more northern part of the Latin Qtr and where I would stay, I also like area around place Contrescarpe or Censier metro. I don't like the Latin Qtr that much between Luxembourg metro and the Seine, over towards bd St-Michel.

I stayed at a real budget hotel in the sixth (no elevator). Doubles were 268ff, but there were other hotels in the area well within you price range, just off Boulevard Montparnasse. I was near the Jardin de Luxembourg. Metro line 4 was quite convenient. For other lines Gare Montparnasse was only a couple blocks further. Lots of reasonable places to eat plus some luxury spots. Let us know what you decide.
