Le Havre to Honfleur or Bayeux

Hello, again. We will be in Le Havre for about 7 hrs. before embarking on the cruise ship. What should we do for the day? How far is it and how would we travel to Honfleur?
And how about a quick trip to Bayeux rather than Honfleur?
I'm open to suggestions.
Thank you,
Toni

If you have only seven hours, Bayeux would be a bit rushed. Honfleur is only a short bus journey over the spectacular Pont de Normandie. The buses are run by Bus Verts (www.busverts14.fr). Rouen is another option, reached by train.

Bonjour,

In Le Havre, you can visit the beautiful "Musée des Beaux-Arts", called "Musée Malraux".
you'll be then able to discover the paintings given to the Musée Malraux (in Le Havre) by Mme Hélène SENN-FOULDS, the grand-daughter of Olivier Senn who was an art collector from Le Havre.

The exhibit started on March 13th and will last until June 12th, 2005. It includes some 205 works of art dating from the end of the XIXth century and the XXth century ( 71 paintings and 129 drawings, etc.) from artists such as Courbet, Monet, Sisley, Marquet, Derain, Delacroix, Matisse, etc.), among which the famous "Portrait of Nini Lopez" by Auguste Renoir and "Bougival" by Derain (Fauvisme movement, 1910-1920)... Among the drawings, some 40 drawings by Degas can be seen :

On the other hand, Le Havre is very close to Honfleur, here is what I wrote previously about this :

"From Le Havre (the architecture of which can be liked or hated, you can reach Honfleur in about 10 minutes if you take the most recent beautiful bridge, called "Le Pont de Normandie"...

Pont de Normandie :

Voilà ! Bon séjour ! Marie

The Bus Verts schedules can be consulted on-line: http://www.busverts.com/itineraires/iti.asp

If you do decide on Honfleur, there are scores of restaurants to choose from for lunch. Many have tables outside on one quay of the breathtaking Old Harbor, but if food is more important than a view, the P'tit Mareyeur, on the rue Haute (for a great long meal), the Ancrage, at the front of the Old Harbor, the Grenouille on the Quai de la Quarantine, and the Ciderie, a creperie, set back from the street on the rue Homme de Bois, are much better.

The Musée Malraux also owns the collection of Dufy paintings donated by his widow. Unfortunately, not very many of them were on view when we visited the museum in September.

But the special exhibit described by marie sounds marvelous!

Honfleur would also be a very nice excursion.

In Honfleur, the restaurant "l'Absinthe" - 10, Quai de la Quarantaine - used to be an excellent address and a beautiful place... We had wonderful meals there. Tél : 02.31.89.39.00

"La Terrasse" is considered as one of the best restaurants in Honfleur but its "annexe", "L'Assiette" is more reasonably priced

La Terrasse et l'Assiette
8 place sainte catherine
14600 HONFLEUR
Tel : 02 31 89 31 33

In Le Havre, the very best restaurant seems to be "La Villa" - 66, boulevard Albert 1er. Tél : 02.35.54.78.80. (according to "Le P'tit Normand&quot

Hi Marie,

L'Absinthe is still a wonderful place to eat! I can't place La Terrace, however. Is it/was it on the square in front of St. Catherine's church?

thank you all for the wonderful suggestions. We enjoy a nice lunch with wine and since we live in landlocked Texas, the waterfront in especially interesting to us. Maybe we will have time to see the museum and then to Honfleur for late lunch.
Marie, what should the weather be like in early June?

Oh, là, là,prédire la météo/weather forecast 2 months in advance, lol !

I can't say much... Being in Normandy, thus, in the north west of France, the weather can be "warm" or... "fresh"... Do take a raincoat and a cardigan in case...

Swamom,

If splitting your time between Le Havre and Honfleur begins to look too complicated, the Boudin museum in Honfleur, three minutes by foot from the Old Harbor, also is very nice. A fine collection of painters of the Seine estuary.
