My husband is from Latvia--came after the war on a liberty ship as a small child. I love your reference to singing. There is a rather large contingent that settled in Minneapolis and they still attend big Latvian songfests in Toronto. For all our travels to Europe we have yet to get to Latvia (his older brother and Latvian wife have been several times) but we hope to get there soon--perhaps I (the non-Latvian) even more than him since I'm a big Art Nouveau fan. Your report may well be the impetus to finally make the trip. Thanks for all your details.
