Rex, couldn't you just as easily have checked the first page at CNN or Yahoo yourself rather than spend the time to ask the original poster to explain herself. Obviously if it is real news (which it is), it would be right there on the first page...(and it has been since about 4:30 east coast US time)

It wasn't there on yahoo at the time I posted. A number of related stories were there, and I could not tell what was the reference at that time.

Is there something wrong with my question?

Is there some reason for you to have questioned my motives, anonymously?
In fact, it still has the appearance of not being there, in the capsule block called "In the News" on www.yahoo.com - - or did I simply fail to hit "refresh"? This may have been my error. I am not using my own computer this afternoon. My own computer is set to refresh every time I go "home" (Yahoo is my home page).
I can't see why anyone would change travel plans, based on these vague alerts. They are a part of our lives now, so we'd better get used to them. Life goes on.

Really, if you looked at relative risk and concerns were rational, I'd suggest you avoid getting behind the wheel of an automobile!

I am not a worry-wart, and I am a strong proponent of the rational use of such concepts as relative risk and statistical probability.

Still, I will not be too critical of those who wonder about how to make plans for international travel. Risk of death or injury is not the issue. Inconvenience, possibly added cost, and maybe anxiety are the issues.

I suspect that more people DID die of U.S. automobile accidents in September 2001 (whole month) than from the terrorist events of September 2001. But the deaths and injuries from automobile crashes affected a few thousands of families. Travel was thrown into turmoil for several days for literally hundreds of thousands, maybe even a million or more, all total.
As a New Yorker who is leaving for Italy on Friday yes I am nervous. I was in Germany on 9/11 and it took me 6 hours to get thru to my husband and children. This time however I can't figure out whether I should be more nervous that I am going to Europe where something could happen or that I'm leaving NY where something could happen. The world is now a scary place and my levels of comfort are not the same as pre 9/11
