You could also do a day trip to Giverny and Claude Monet's garden. The wife and I did this a couple of weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed the tour. We rented a car at the Gare Lyon station and it's about 1.5 hrs drive.

A one-day car rental normally costs about the same as a 3-day rental, so it's not an obvious choice, especially when you can easily, and cheaply, get to Giverny on public transportation. I really don't know why anyone would rent a car to do this, unless they were intent on driving around other nearby areas.

I didn't see the notification on all of these posts - thank you all for your help! does anyone know anything about assumption day in france? we just found out that it's a federal holiday while we're there. does that still mean most restaurants and shops will be open, but governmental buildings will be closed? i would assume the train runs since i can book tickets for that day.

bilboburgler - when you say 'Etretat is not really worth the getting there,' do you mean there there isn't that much to do there besides seeing the cliffs? it looks so beautiful that i want to go, but not sure if it's just too far out of the way to not be worth our time.

Thanks, all!

>>Etretat<<

The cliffs are "it", but combine it with a visit to Veules les Roses.

Assumption Day just like a Sunday - small shops and cafes open especially in tourist areas.
