Las Fallas and beyond: Nikki's trip to Valencia and Lisbon
#61
Sounds like your whole trip was a great success -as usual. I'm wondering did the festivities extend to all areas of the city center or just the main squares? I'm always curious how different a city feels when there is a festival on. >>
I hope that Nikki doesn't mind my chiming in here to say that it was almost everywhere in the centre. On the two main procession days groups would start to gather in various areas of the centre from about 9am so that they could take their rightful places in the parade which carried on until about midnight. One morning I was just strolling round the centre and came across one of these spots so I took a seat at the nearby bar and had a drink while I watched the goings on. Not sure how they knew which order to get into but I suppose they've been doing it for a long time.
So what with all the processing and the 2pm fireworks, and the Fallas figures and the odd extra market or two I'd say it felt pretty special. But if you wanted to get away it was still business as usual over at the beach and if you walked away from the very centre. And most of the museums were open, though not necessarily as often as usual as Elizabeth says.
As for the noise of the fireworks, Indyhiker, my room was at the back of the Colon, overlooking a school playground and I didn't hear anything of the fireworks in my room.

just want to clarify this —- the information that the market was closed due to Las Fallss was subsequently learned to be false. It was closed as per usual on Sunday and for a stat holiday on Tuesday. I mention this as it would be a non starter for me to miss that market — if indyhiker feels the same!

I'm always curious how different a city feels when there is a festival on. When I was there just over a week later I still saw some fencing (main square) and crowd barriers being taken down and such. Anyway, probably both times are great to visit just different. I usually try to stay away from festivals as I like to see places in their 'natural' state, but when I have been somewhere during a festival it's always been a great experience.
I see in that last photo you have your Olympus. I am just about to buy an EM5 (thanks in large part to your suggestion to look at Olympus). Wondering what lens you have (and do you switch lenses on a trip)?

I had a room with the same configuration Ann describes but I certainly did hear fireworks from the room. Closing the windows made it quieter but still didn’t block out the sound. We were OK with that.
I bought my camera with the two kit lenses: 14-42 and 40-150. Those are the only ones I have. I don’t always bring the telephoto with me but I did use it a lot on this trip, especially to get close to the people in the parade and to photograph frescoes in the church.

Great report. This festival was entirely new to me and your photos were a delight. Also wonderful to read about the fodorites gathering.
I like your camera a lot Nikki. I came close to buying a DSLR the last time I got a camera but ended up getting Canon's largest point and shoot. While the zoom is pretty good for a point and shoot, it's not the same.
