Lake Garda Italy

We wish to travel from Trieste to Lake Garda by train on September 15th 2013.
Is this possible. Also would like to know the best towns to stay at Lake Garda for 3 nights, Preferably the verona end of lake.

You can take the train from Trieste to Desenzano del Garda. You would have to change train at Venice Mestre. Travel time is about 4 hours.

IMHO I always prefer Sirmione. If you can get a hotel within the Old Town walls so much the better. We've stayed at the Olivia and Flaminia.

Much of the Eastern side of the lake is accessible from Verona but for atmosphere I believe that Sirmione does it.

Salo on SE side of the lake is lovely. It has a nice promenade and many interesting shops. It was recommended to us by an Italian friend who lives in Milan. There is ferry service to the rest of the lake.
