Couldn't resist looking, and one way tickets from Rome to Munich for Aug 29 of this year are less than $90 per person flying Vueling. For this particular flight, it would be a 4pm departure, arriving around 6pm in Munich. Of course you would need to get to the airport, but a car shuttle transfer shouldn't run you more than $15 per person, or you could take the train.

But I don't know your real dates, and whether booking in advance would lower the cost even further. And you might still think the extra money is worth it drive. More than the money, I would just want to avoid all that driving.

If you do decide to drive, I would be a hawk about the fine print regarding drop-off fees and insurance issues, and actual real total final costs for gas, tolls and parking.

Füssen is not exactly an ideal base for Chiemsee and another castle further north.

Could do the castles by local bus, GAP and monastery Ettal (for example) easily by train from Füssen. And why not rent another car in Germany for just a couple of days?

I would not hesitate to book Vueling, which flies thousands of flights a year in Europe without problems. One of those threads is 4 years old and the other is complaining about customer service during an air traffic controllers strike! You can ask on the Flyer Talk Forums if there is any reason not to fly Vueling.

But if you have any hesitations, then you can also fly Lufthansa or Alitalia from Rome to Munich for about 20 euros more per person -- and that might change to a lesser amount if you plug in your exact travel dates.

PS: One thing you do need to be aware of is luggage weight restrictions on low cost carriers. Devil is in the details about the optimal trip for your family, but at least you have a lot of time to check out the possibilities.
