Get the Michelin Green Guide for the Atlantic Coast. Lots of shopping there. Nice farmer's market too - if you will be there on market day. I hope your "stop" is not on a Sunday.

There's plenty to do and see in La Rochelle, enough to keep you busy for a few days, especially if you take the time to go out to Ile de Ré. With only a day, though, you'll probably want to confine yourself to the port area between the two towers, and the main square. You can read all about it on the town's official website.

Here is my own most recent report about La Rochelle, including the boat excursion to Fort Boyard: http://anyportinastorm.proboards.com/thread/8097/la-rochelle-2017

I
also very much recommend the aquarium of La Rochelle, one of the best in Europe: Aquarium de La Rochelle | Any Port in a Storm

Don't miss the daily market; it"s the one time my wife regretted not having a stove to cook the prepared roasts offered by the butchers.
