Koln, Germany - rail station/rental car question
Does anyone know how far it is from the main rail station in Koln to this address:
427 Bergisch Gladbach
I can not find an address for the rail station, or else I would map it myself.
I am just wondering, because we would like to pick our car up at this city location, instead of at the train station to aviod the 19% tax.
Thanks!

On www.viamichelin.co.uk, it says that it is 22km from the hauptbahnhof ( main train station) to Gladbach. But I didn't have the postal code to verify this is the correct Gladbach...

427 Bergisch Gladbach is not an address. It is only the 3 last numbers of the postal code and the town name.
In any case Bergisch Gladbach is the terminal station of an S-Bahn (suburban train) line and is NOT Köln/Cologne. The train run from the main station every 20 minutes. If you buy a ticket, don't buy one from wherever you are to Köln but to
Bergisch Gladbach.

Try using the address Domkloster, which is where the Cologne Cathedral is located and is right near the train station. There is a street called Bergisch Gladbach which is 6.5kms from the Cathedral. From other posts it looks like you need to work out whether the address refers to the street or town.

The complete postal code of the city of Bergisch-Gladbach is 51xxx. It is 51465 in the center of town, at the Konrad-Adenauer-Platz where town hall stands. So your address must be a bit out of the center.
From 50667 at the Bahnhofsvorplatz in Koeln (the square outside of the central station) to 51427 it's 20 km, almost due East outside of Koeln.
As has been stated, B.-G. is the end of the S-Bahn line S11 that begins in Wuppertal at the other end, and runs through Duesseldorf and Koeln. It's a 20-minute ride from Koeln Hbf.
Are you sure you're saving 19 percent in taxes? What kind of taxes are these that don't apply in B.-G. but do apply in central Koeln? Seems odd somehow.

hmmmmm, I'll have to talk to Bob at Gemut again, he's the one that gave me all this information, but it seems like I am missing something, I'm sure glad I asked!
Thanks, everyone for your replies, I am going to try to gather a little more information.

Yah - the 19% VAT tax is charged everywhere - and i doubt that there is a pickup surcharge at the train station. Often agents don't quote the VAT in pricing but i don't think you can (legally) sidestep the 19% tax if it's indeed a tax. It would be much easier to pick it up at the train station - in fact i'd suggest you pick it up at the Deutz train station just across the Rhine from the Hauptbahnhof, the main station in a much more congested area. Constant trains shuttle between Hauptbahnhof and Deutz or it's a 10-min stroll across the Rhine rail/pedestrian bridge.

Thanks, I seem to be having trouble with the day I am picking up the car (Oct. 3), many of the car rental companies are closed....it may be a German holiday, I am not sure. So my options of where to pick up the car are limited. I don't know that the 19% is a "tax", from what I've read it's some type of charge for picking up at a rail station or airport. Bob, from Gemut, confirmed this and quoted me a higher price for picking up at a railstation/airport.

Did you try www.e-sixt.de/? I input 3.10. (3rd of October) pickup at 10:00 (AM) from Köln Hauptbahnhof (central principal train station) location and it doesn't balk, whereas it does tell me that a return on the 7th (SAt. ) in the afternoon is not possible. So it is programmed to know about closures - but to be sure, call Sixt
