Koln Cathedral

I would like to drive to the cathedral in Koln Germany from the Rhine near Boppard. What I am interested in finding out is if it is difficult to get to the cathedral from the autobahn, and is there a place to park right at the cathedral? Thanks!

I was there in May '97. I recall that the Dom is in a crowded square near some Roman ruins and art and archeology museums which I foud more interesting than the rather dark and overdone church. I don't have a detail map showing parking, and I was on a tour bus, so they took care of that! I hope a more knowledgeable person can help you. Enjoy!

Agree with the above. I didn't see any parking close to the dom. It's right in the centre of town in smallish cobbled streets on one side and a main street nearby (which could have parking but would be hard to get due to its location). The dom is very close to the railway station so you could always commute from outside for the day.

I visited Koln last week and took in the Dom. It is a magnificent structure from the outside. From the autobahn, follow the signs to the city center, "CENTRUM". The main train station "BAHNHOF" is located adgacent to the cathedral. You will likely find parking on the streets near the station. It will be a short walk 5- 10 minute walk to the Dom. There are all sorts of small hotels in this area. We stayed in the Brandenberg but I would recommend the Italia across the street. It is listed in the tour books. Make sure to visit one of the breweries (beer halls) near the Dom. Also see if you can find a small souvenior shop on the street off the front of the Dom to the right. It has postcards depicting the area after WWII bombing. Hopes this helps.

I concur on everything so far, but would add - the train station is right there at the Dom. If all you're doing is driving there, and back, you might just as well take the train.

The Dom will only take a little of your time, the inside structure is relatively unremarkable. The stainded glass is really what there is to see.

Afterwards, head behind it down towards the river for a nice alfresco meal.
