KLM to charge for checked bags

I read in my Dutch newspaper today that from April KLM will be charging for checked bags. As always with these things it is cheaper to buy the checked bag before check-in than at check in. €15 per bag before hand, €30 at the airport.
At the same time they are going to strictly enforce carry-on rules. Any bag which doesn't meet their 55x25x35cm 12kg rule will be put in the hold and you will be charged €30 at the gate!

Some Flying Blue members will not be charged.

I haven't seen this news on the KLM website yet but here is the news story in English: http://www.dutchnews.nl/news/archive...rges_for_s.php

There was a story late last year about the millions and millions airlines have made on these so-called auxiliary fees (bag check fees, in flight meal fees, fees to sit in certain seats, etc.) which have apparently significantly increased revenues.

I'm not surprised that KLM is going to do this. The better question might be why did they wait so long to do so?

Thanks for posting that -- I guess it's just a matter of time before all the airlines do the same.

When you've paid to put a bag in the hold, and it is delayed/not on the plane with you, will an airline refund that fee?

Interestingly there are exceptions to this new policy. According to the KLM website on flights to Georgia, Italy, Turkey, the Ukraine, Russia and Belarus there is no charge for first checked bag.
