Bob--- could you send me a copy of your trip report? I will love to hear more about Mamertine Prison. Also, can you talk about the Pope's General Audience?

Hi Bob and Carol,
Sounds like you had a wonderful time. We leave in 6 days for Italy and will be spending 6 days in Rome. In recent conversations with friends I've been lead to believe that the "pickpockets" are alive and well in Rome. Could you please comment on this? I also would like a copy of your report.

Hi, Bob -- My husband and I will be following in your footsteps in September. Could you please add us to your trip report e-mail list? We only have 2 1/2 days there and your comments will help us prioritize. Grazie,

Stephanie

Although i'm not going again anytime soon, I'd love to read your report. It's fun to re-live memories through someone else's stories. If you can break it up into separate sections, we can all read it, rather than having to send lots of individual emails.

To Maira:

The Papal Audience was just great. We were in about the 12th row or so on the right side and we had a pretty good view of the Pope from there.

If you're going to Rome, you can have your hotel I'm sure get passes for you or you can have them reserved online & pick them up in Rome.

It was very hot during our week in Rome and it was hot the day of the Audience. But it wasn't unbearable.

This was one of the highlights of our week.

Regarding Mamertine, you'll see my comments in my trip report when I email it to you. But suffice to say it was a great experience for me to be in the dungeon that once held Paul and Peter. It is located right near the Forum so when you go to the Forum you can also stop at Mamertine. It doesn't cost anything to see but donations are welcome as you enter.

To: Maureen

We were not victimized by pickpockets but once we were approached by a young guy who kind of wanted a few bucks. This happened as we crossed Ponte Sisto heading over to Trestevere.

My wife had a somewhat nervewracking experience as she waited by the Tiber while I went to get bus tickets. I spell this out in my trip report. Three guys approached her and two other women who were just relaxing by the Tiber. Needless to say my wife and the other women hightailed it out of there.

I found myself relaxing during the week when it came to thinking about pickpockets. I heard all of the stories also but I kind of got lazy at times. I think it's always a good idea to be aware of your surroundings and where your money is. I don't think you have anything to worry about though. Rome is great!

I hope this helps.

Bob

Glad to be of service to all. Just trying to return all of the many favors I have received from other Fodorites in planning my recent vacations.

If anyone has any specific Q's about Rome, maybe I can help. All I can do is share my experience of one great week there but maybe I know something that can be helpful.

Regards to all.

Bob (& Carol)

Would love to receive your trip report; we're going to Rome for the first time in October, and I'm trying to plan our four days. My head is spinning: There's so much to choose from! Thanks.

Bob - I am enthralled reading just your brief comments on your trip to Rome. Could you please e-mail me your report as we are leaving next Wednesday. Also, I read everything about moneybelts but nothing of the "over the neck" pouches that are worn inside your shirt - are these okay? Thanks for your help!

To Kathy & Graham,

Sending you the trip report separately.

Graham, with regard to money belts, etc. it's basically your choice I feel. I think a moneybelt should work. Maybe others on the forum feel differently.

I even tried the following in Rome - wait till you hear this -- I took a day's worth of lire, kept it in my lower front pocket, and my check card I kept in my left shoe!! How's that? I figured if they want it that bad they'll have to take off my shoe to get it. And that's afte walking for hours through 90 degree Rome weather! If they were willing to do that, they're welcome
to the card! (I tried that for one day only!) I thought I might ruin the card!

Whatever it takes, they say.

Ciao!

Bob
