"The only light moment (depending on your point of view) came when someone asked where the british were buried. A nice looking Scottish women said, "over there where we let people walk their dogs." " <BR> <BR>As a Lowland Scot, I find this story reflects very badly on this "nice" Scottish woman. For a start, Scots are British. Many Scots were fighting on the side of the English. English does not = British by the way. On a third point, all over the world wherever you go wargraves are respected. You should have rebuked that woman.

In response to Sue who said why doesn't anyone go to Cornwall? We did -- twice, and loved it. Stayed in St.Ives the first time and made a day trip. The next time stayed in St. Mawes and drove to Fowey. They were having a Daphne duMaurier festival. It was wonderful finding entire bookstores devoted to her books. It was also fun stopping on the way to St.Ives to see the "real" Jamaica Inn. I'd love to go back and see Clovelly, Newquay and Falmouth and Mousehole and Penzance. Never enough time. Cornwall is stony and windblown on the Atlantic side as if former inhabitants had a rough time making a living there. The channel side is very lush. I have to confess we made a trip similar to Tony's in 16 days -- without seeing London or North Wales -- and didn't feel too rushed. We did see Tintern Abbey and the River Wye and would like to go back to that part of Wales. Doubt I'd go back to the Cotswolds. Loved the Lake Country -- possibly my favorite. Also stayed at Craigallechie (sp) in the Scottish Highlands. Unfortunately Hidcote Garden was closed the day we were there so didn't see it, but thought Sissinghurst one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen.

I'm glad you enjoyed yourself, but although I don't wish to add a jarring note, I have to agree with Lowlander. <BR>If you visited a battlefield of your own civil war in one of the Southern States and asked where the Yankees were buried, I imagine that you wouldn't like to hear, "Where we let the dogs do their business." <BR>
