Just Back from Bath, England

Only two days in Bath, and one day it snowed! But a report for the record:

Mai Thai Restaurant. A real beautiful place, very authentic tables, chairs and dresses on the hostess and waitresses. Excellent food, though not a real bargain. Still, I'd visit again.

Beajolais Restaurant. Lovely, candlelit, casual. Truly french atmosphere and food that is outstanding. Short menu, but well chosen. Wine list is good, though not bargain priced. but the meal was a delight, and of the highest quality imaginable. The duck was positively orgasmic, and finally we found a place in England that knew how to treat a fillet of beef without turning it grey.

Marlbourough House B&B- owned by an American, specializing in organic and meat-free diets. Caters to vegans, diabetics, gluten free, etc. Will cook dinner for any special diet if requested. We did not have these requirements, but loved the place. Every detail of the house is lovingly displayed and beautiful. A bargain in this price range and I highly recommend you consider it. One mile out of town, but easily walkable in better weather. Bus stop at corner, several pubs and restaurants nearby. I was sorry we were here for only one night.

On which days did you travel. I have plans to go there on a Saturday (the 26th of May). This is a bank Holiday weekend and I wonder if it will be very crowded or if the trains are running on a regular schedule.

Saturdays area always busy in Bath, and you are traveling at Prime Time (end of May AND a bank Holiday weekend). Don't know about the trains, but I wouldn't worry -- when you get there, ring up BritRail. They are extraordinarily helpful. Bath, I suspect, nearly always 'feels' crowded as the streets are so small. Suggest strongly you make hotel & restaurant reservations well in advance. And don't worry so much - enjoy yourself. Hell, we lost an entire day to snow and still had a good time!

Hello Jeanette,

You found one of my favourite eating places, - Mai Thai. It's lovely, isn't it? Their fixed-price lunch menu is good value...

For Joe & Eva:
Other nice eating places are Tilleys, (next to Sally Lunn's), and the hotel opposite the railway station...

For morning coffee/afternoon tea try the Pump Room (with musical accompaniment, - a pianist or 'The Pump Room Trio') or Sally Lunn's...

Eva: There is the Bath Music Festival in May if you're interested...

Let me know if I can be of any further help. Enjoy your stay!

Steve
