Just back from 4 nights in Bruges

Three couples traveling together and we are just back from a lovely 4 days and nights in Bruges, a nice ending to a 2 week trip in the Benelux, Amsterdam and Germany.

We stayed at the NH Bruge which was a great choice for us, with easy access to the center and to the train station.

Other than one awful meal at Cafe Marco, we had very good food experiences. Miss Ellie was our regular spot for breakfast and we enjoyed our lunch and dinner at Marieke van Brugghe and two dinners at De Vlaamsche Pot. Their steak tartare and rabbit stew were both wonderful!

We made two day trips, one to Oostende which was mostly closed and with lots of construction, and one to Ghent which made for a nice afternoon.

This was our first trip to Belgium and while we are not planning a return trip anytime soon, we did enjoy our visit and especially our time in Bruges.

How did you do with the food?

Sorry! I hit the "submit" button too soon.

I recall you asking questions here about avoiding a cream and butter overload in Belgium, so I'm curious how you fared in that regard.

Hi zeppole, you have a great memory.

Everyone spoke English so it made ordering quite simple. I easily managed to avoid all cream and butter and did not sample the frites or waffles, which were everywhere. This was more than made up for by the rest of the group, however, who ate their weight in frites.

I did try several bites of chocolate, which was yummy. And also the moules, which are easily found served natural style.

While Belgian cuisine is definitely not a favorite of mine, I was content with what I ordered.

It's funny, but I just came back from Bologna, and one of my favorite meals included pasta and sausage kicked up with cream. I also passed an ice-skating rink on my way to the train station and I was surprised to a vendor doing a whopping business selling Belgian waffles (optional nutella).

I think, like chasing the horizon, I could never eat my weight in Belgian waffles, although I'd love to try. Beligian chocolate is my favorite chocolate on the planet, but I only like some Belgian frites (the matchstick varieties, not the one the size of fingers). I love moules, but we also get great mussels around here. Alas, we don't get jenever, though or great beer.

Hope you enjoyed the Michaelangelo and got a chance to walk among the windmills around the St Anne's district (which is my favorite part of Brugge). I should probably watch that movie, In Bruges, but I can't stand Ralphe Fiennes or Colin Farrell.
