And what is astronomical, exactly? I ask because airfare is generally quite a bit higher in June than in off-season. Depending on what you're seeing now, you may or may not be able to expect a lower price for the dates you're interested in, unfortunately.

Guess I need to be more specific...."astronomical" is more than $1100/pp RT from Greenville(SC) or Charlotte (CLT)...in a pinch we could fly out of ATL. Have looked into consolidators and their prices are in the $600 range.

We've traveled from Atlanta to Germany (actually flew in to Zurich) and Italy (Rome) several times in June with kids. The best rates we have gotten were around $750 pp on Delta. If you wait until the first of April, the prices should start to go down a bit but the flights will fill up fast. Changing days on front end and back end can have a big impact on the price! Check every day and jump when you get the best combination of days, distinations, and price.

I haven't tried it but another poster has and had great success with 111.1800flyeurope.
I checked airfares to France for May and they were about $200 less than what I could get throue Orbitz. It's "blind" but there aren't too many non-stops carriers from DFW to Paris...

If I have to fly during peak travel times, I use my travel agent to find a good package deal. This seems to keep the price down and you usually need to rent a car and book a hotel room for at least a few days. We did this for a trip to Hawaii and we got reasonable airline tickets. Although the Internet makes travel agents obsolete, oftentimes they can get the best deals.
